You shifted awake, the sounds of crickets replaced by the coo of the mourning doves. The sun had just recently risen over the distant mountains and hills, letting the dew reflect off the grass in a cascade of jewels.
The crackling embers of the extinguished fire lay dormant, their once vibrant warmth now faded into the cool morning air. You shifted, the crisp breeze sending a shiver down your spine as you became aware of the chill in the air.
Instinctively, you moved to draw the blanket closer around your form, seeking refuge from the morning cold. However, as your hand reached for the comforting fabric, your movements stilled as you noticed the heaviness of Levi lying beside you, his features softened in sleep.
His arm lay casually draped over your waist, the weight of his touch a silent reminder of his presence beside you. It was a gesture so familiar, yet now, with the distance that had grown between you, you grew uneasy, not knowing whether to remove him or sink into his embrace.
You peered over your shoulder at him, your eyes traced his body, his muscles still showing slightly through the shirt he wore, now disheveled from sleep. His hair hung in his face in an unkempt way you were now realizing you missed seeing. Your eyes traveled down to where your backside was pressed up against his hips.
The two of you most likely moved closer to each other in sleep to keep warm, but all you could think about right now was how familiar this scene was. Your thoughts drifted back to that first night after the ball, and how he...
No. You shook your head, throwing the intimate memory from your mind. Do not let yourself get caught up, Adeline! You both know distance is for the best right now. You scolded yourself as you cautiously laid back down, unsure of what to do.
Was he even aware of what was transpiring? Would he want you to remove him and speak nothing of it or was he doing this on purpose.
You didn't want to make things awkward after waking up together, but you didn't know what else to do. In an attempt to make things appear more casual, you tried to squirm your way out of his embrace, hoping that he would wake up later and you wouldn't have to address the awkward sleeping arrangement. However, much to your dismay, the shift in your movements caused Levi to wake.
