You huffed a sigh as you sat on the edge of your bed, neatly folding your belongings before tucking them away in your bag. After the meeting with Hizuru, the Scouts had no choice but to wait for their response on whether or not your ally would help you trade with the modern world.
In the meantime, it was determined that Sasha, Connie, Armin, and the rest of the younger Scouts would continue to help construct the Trost Railway, which was hopefully going to industrialize Paradis faster than the blink of an eye.
Hange declared she will stay behind at the port to await for Hizuru's response, secretly hoping she can somehow persuade them to say yes.
And for you, it was back to the palace. Mitras had become somewhat of your homebase these past two years, as you were always busy helping Historia run the new government. You were able to travel, but it was mostly on business only, and very short lived.
However, the thought of returning to Mitras filled you with a sense of hesitation. It was rare for you to come this far from the capital, and even rarer that you had the chance to visit your childhood home. You had only done so twice since Shiganshina, and you had a nagging urge in the back of your mind that you couldn't return to Mitras without stopping there first.
You paused, folding a shirt absentmindedly as you considered how to broach the subject with Historia. You've been thinking about it for days, but you weren't quite sure how she'd react to your request.
But the longing to see your old home, to confront the memories that still haunt you, was too strong to ignore.
Thus, taking a deep breath, you try to calm yourself for the conversation ahead. You know you'll have to approach it delicately, perhaps even wait for the right moment to bring it up. After all, Historia has her duties as Queen, and you don't want to burden her with your own personal desires.
You stand, closing up your bag before making your way to the courtyard where everyone is gathered, saying their goodbyes. You spot familiar faces sharing hugs and jokes, some more excited to hit the road than others. Jean stands off to the side, scowling at the prospect of working on the Trost Railway in the sweltering summer heat.
"Hey, Jean," you greet him with a small smile, trying to lighten the mood. "Looks like you drew the short straw with this assignment, huh?"
Jean grumbles in response, wiping sweat from his brow. "Yeah, tell me about it. Spending my summer sweating buckets on a construction site wasn't exactly how I envisioned it."
You chuckle sympathetically, "Well, look on the bright side – at least it's no longer titan territory, right?"
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Jean sighed "But I'd much rather be out on another expedition, you know?"
You nod sympathetically, knowing that Jean thrives on the excitement of adventure. "I get that. Being cooped up in the capital isn't thrilling either. Even if it is cooler inside."
