I stared at the wooden beams planted in the ceiling above me. I don't know how long I'd been staring like this, but nighttime soon turned into morning as the sun fully flooded my room. I had tried to get some sleep. Honestly, I really tried. But it was useless. My mind was too preoccupied.

I let out a bitter laugh, soft enough that only I could hear it. My last night in this world, and I couldn't even get a proper rest.

I shifted my head to the clock on the wall.

10:47 a.m.

I knew I should get up. There were things to do, people to face, but my body refused to move. Every muscle felt paralyzed by something much heavier than exhaustion. Guilt, maybe. Or fear. I don't know.

Then, I heard her voice.

"Oliver!" The shout echoed through the hall, followed by the sound of footsteps thumping closer. Gabi. Of course, it would be her.

I quickly shut my eyes, pretending to be asleep. Maybe if I stayed still enough, she'd leave me alone.

Please, I silently begged. Let me lay here a little longer.

But the door swung open with that same fiery energy Gabi always had, and I knew it was over.

"Oliver!" she said again.

I didn't stir, forcing my body to stay perfectly still, even limiting my breathing to mimic sleep, hoping she'd get bored and leave.

Maybe if I avoided the outside world, I could pretend none of it was real. That I wasn't about to do something I'd never be able to take back.

For a moment, I could hear her hovering in the doorway, her shoes scuffing the floor as if she was debating what to do next. For a second, I thought she was leaving.

But no. Instead, I felt the bed dip slightly as Gabi leaped onto the edge.

"Oliver, come on! Wake up! You never sleep in this late." She bounced impatiently, and I could hear her pout, like she thought this was a game. I clenched my jaw, doing everything I could to seem lost in sleep, even though every fiber of me wanted to snap and tell her to leave me alone.

She didn't give up.

"It's festival day!" her voice was filled with excitement. "Falco's already up, and everyone's getting ready. You promised to walk around with us, remember?"

Festival day... I couldn't even remember making that promise. My mind was too busy for little things like that.

Gabi persisted. She was already tugging at the blanket, trying to pull me out of bed. "Come on! We'll miss everything if you just lie here all day!"

Would that really be so bad?

I cracked one eye open, catching a glimpse of her face beaming down at me. There was no escaping this.
