Two years.
Nearly two years had passed since the Battle of Shiganshina, and in that time, so much has changed. Uncomfortable, uncertain, unwelcome change.
After Wall Maria was erased of titans and humanity inside the walls had begun rebuilding their lives, the Scouts began doing the best they could to learn about this newfound enemy–The Nation of Marley. The nation that you've only read about in Grisha's books, but a threat that remains as real as the sea, which once remained only a myth as well.
You peered through the window onto the glistening blue vastness, the distant sounds of waves lapping the shore filling your subconscious.
It was this same spot where you and your friends encountered the first of many Marleyan scout ships sent to spy on your island about a year ago. That's when Yelena came into the picture. Her and her group of 'Anti-Marleyan Volunteers', or so they called themselves. But you only trusted them as far as you could throw them, which isn't saying very much.
Nonetheless, it was thanks to Yelena that your island, now introduced to you as the 'Island of Paradis', had advanced so far and so quickly. She came bringing knowledge of the outside world, and even if your gut despised her, you had to rely on her for the moment if Paradis were to make it in this new world.
In that year alone, the Island of Paradis had upgraded nearly all military weapons, making previously high-end guns just about standard issue.
The Trost Railway, which connected the Walls and the shore through an invention called the 'locomotive' was currently being built as well.
However, the greatest advancement of them all was arguably the speedy production of Paradis Harbor, where you now stood, preparing to welcome Paradis's first international guest: Hizuru.
Being so entangled in the stress of racing to catch up with the rest of the world, you hadn't even begun to think of how to deal with Marley. But with Paradis relatively on its feet again, now was as good of a time as any. And so, as Yelena does, she pulled some strings and managed to invite the sole nation loyal to Paradis.
You were lost in your own thoughts as you gazed out at the shimmering expanse of the sea. It was a reminder of how vast and unknown the world beyond Paradis truly was.
A hand on your shoulder brought you back to reality, and you turned to see Levi standing beside you, his expression reflecting the same weariness you felt.
"It's time," he said simply, his voice carrying his usual realist tone. "We need to head down to the docks."
"I know," You replied, still looking into the distance where Hizuru's ship was now, making its way closer to the island by the minute. A sense of apprehension filled your mind that you didn't bother trying to hide.
"Don't you feel like this is all happening a bit too fast? I mean, it feels like Yelena keeps dumping heaps of new responsibilities on us before we can even stomach the last. It's like she's trying to burn us out or something..."
