PROLOUGE

.

Carmen Greene, daughter, sister, niece, best friend. Carmen Greene, growing up in a big farm and small, vintage house by horse stable. She liked climbing tress and taking found birds home. Every time she walked to school, she stopped to pet a cat and be late for class. She was in her head a lot, feeling everything deeply but never talked about, getting angry about her emotions easily. She didn't concentrate in class and only way she could study or do homework was with music playing in the background.

She was very well known for always sitting alone at school and being alone in sandbox at recess. She knew people talked about her- not in a good way -and made rumors about her, but no one ever said anything to her face. She was also very well known for breaking kids' noses. Maybe because they were disrespectful to her or being mean to her younger and autistic brother Matthew.

That's what happened today and it wasn't pretty to look at. It only took a kid to push Matt back a little bit and he was on the floor, Carmen's knuckles flying at his face. And that's how she ended up there- in principal's office -with her Mother, Dottie and principal talking about her. She wasn't listening. She never did. But she knew what they were talking about. Juvie, detention, serious talk, grounding, help from therapist.

She wasn't crazy and her Mother knew that. However, Dottie was always too scared to stand up to people. Scared what they'll think about her, what they'll say about her and Carmen and her family were practically punching bags for words and rumors. She knew when she's on her way home with Dottie, she'll get the same talk over and over again.

Ya can't hurt people. But they can hurt us?

Ya need to let go of you hero complex. I was helpin' a disabled kid.

What do you think others will think? Let 'em talk and they'll see what'll happen.

Same story, same situation almost everyday. Oh, how she wished people would start saying shit about her Mother so she'd finally get over her fear. Words can't explain what lines Carmen would go through to get Dottie to listen.

...

Carmen peeked through the door of her parents' bedroom where her Father, Josh, laid on his bed. Dottie was downstairs, writing grocery list for tomorrow. Carmen was supposed to be asleep right now but she couldn't help but want her Dad. "I can hear ya brethin', Carmi." Carmen gasped at sudden voice but she realized it was just her Father. "C'mon in."

Carmen quietly opened the door, and walked in the room. "Can I sleep net to ya?" Carmen whispered making Josh chuckle before coughing roughly. "'Course, kid." She crawled on the bed, laying her head on Josh's shoulder as he put his hand on her back. He rubbed her back to help her sleep but she was wide awake.

"What'cha thinkin' about?" Josh asked.

"I don't want ya to go." Carmen whispered, hugging her Father closer.

"I ain't goin' anywhere." Josh kissed the top of her head. "Even when I go up one day, you'll find me."

"What?"

"You will see things that remind ya of me." Josh explained.

"Like melted chocolate?" Carmen suggested, making them both chuckle. Josh and Carmen always used to buy melted chocolate in bottles, then eat them in ten minutes before their stomach hurt. They were obsessed.

"Yeah, sure." The father explained. "One day you'll even meet someone who'll remind ya of me."

"How?" Carmen started. "I don't wanna anyone but ya."

"I know, baby." He patted her back. "Gonna take care of your Mom and baby-brother for me, yeah?"

"Promise." Carmen whispered, taking Josh's pinky in her's. "I love you, Daddy."

"I love ya too, Carmi."
