Sophie walked down the sidewalk of her town and turned left. She walked into a parking lot and then opened the door.

'Animal Shelter'

She'd been volunteering there for a while and she was training a new volunteer.

"Oh good morning, Sophie," Oralie smiled at her.

"Hi, Oralie," Sophie smiled back and grabbed her badge.

"The new volunteer is with the newborn puppies, room 12," Oralie winked and Sophie rolled her eyes. 

She walked down the hall and opened the door to room 12.

Then she met eyes with a boy with ice blue eyes and blonde hair.

"Hi," Sophie kneeled down to say hello to the puppies, her knees cracking in the process

"Hi," The boy smiled at her and Sophie blushed.

"I'm Keefe Sencen," The boy smirked and held out his hand.

"Sophie Foster," Sophie took his hand.

"Pleasure to meet you," He winked.

Sophie rolled her eyes.

"So today we're going to be taking the dogs for a walk," Sophie stood up and wiped the invisible dust off her pants.

"Really?!" Keefe exclaimed.

"Yep, come with me," Sophie held the door open for him and he walked out. They made their way to the cages and each grabbed a dog.

"That's Lucy," Sophie grabbed the leashes.

"She's adorable," Keefe said while Lucy licked his face.

"Who's that?" Keefe asked, pointing to the dog Sophie was walking.

"This is Silveny," Sophie patted the dogs head.

"Can we switch?" Keefe made puppy dog eyes.

"Sure, why not?" Sophie and him switched leashes and walked to the trail.

"So tell me about yourself," Keefe made conversation.

"Um I'm 17, I've been working here for about 2 years, I love dogs and my favorite color is red," She tugged out an eyelash.

"Cool. I'm 18 and I'm volunteering here because I need some school credit. I also love animals. My favorite color is brown,"

"Nice," Sophie didn't know what to say.

"Have you ever been to jail?" Keefe asked nonchalantley.

"What?!" Sophie exclaimed.

"Just makin' conversation," Keefe shrugged and Sophie laughed.

"No, I've never been to jail,"

"Me neither,"

They walked in silence until Keefe broke it.

"Wanna hang out after our shift is over?" Keefe asked.

"Sure," Sophie smiled and him and Keefe smiled back.

"Ew, I just stepped in⎯OH MY GOD IT'S SHIT!" Keefe gagged and Sophie gagged with him.

"Ouch," Sophie grabbed the power hose and hosed down his shoe, spraying him in the process.

"Hey! My hair takes forever to do!" He grabbed a bucket of water. 

"So does mine," Sophie crossed her arms and glared.

She turned her back and Keefe snuck behind her and dumped the bucket of cold water on her head.

"Keefe!" Sophie wrung out her hair.

"My bad, Foster," Keefe smirked.

"I hate you!" She wiped her eyes.

"Love ya too," Keefe winked and Sophie groaned.

"Guys, what is going on!" Oralie put her hands on her hips and Sophie and Keefe looked at each other.

"Oops?" Keefe smirked.

"Sophie, you're supposed to be teaching him good things," Oralie sighed.

"Sorry, Oralie," Sophie smiled.

"It's fine, just clean it up," Oralie walked away and Sophie and Keefe burst out in laughter as if they knew each other for a long time.

"Okay now we feed the dogs," Sophie took off her soaking wet sweatshirt.

"Like bacon?" Keefe asked.

Sophie scoffed. "No, Keefe. Not bacon." 

"Right right. Just checkin'" He shrugged again.

Weeks went by and Sophie and Keefe became closer and closer.

Best friends

Or more?

"Hey Soph," Keefe hugged her from behind one morning.

"Hi, Keefe," Sophie smiled and hung up the clipboard she was holding.

"Whatcha doing?" Keefe asked.

"I was about to let the dogs out to play, wanna join?" Sophie smirked.

"YES!" Keefe exclaimed and ran to grab Silveny, his favorite dog.

The two walked out side with the puppies trotting behind.

Sophie opened the sliding doors and all the dogs ran out, barking and yipping.

"I love dogs," Sophie muttered.

"Same," Keefe added.
