Wren's pov
We had been walking for hours and had still not arrived at the clearing Ray had directed us to. Getting bored I picked up a couple of sticks lighting them on fire as we went before dropping them when they had burnt out. "Must you keep doing that Wren?" Stefan asked annoyed at the burning smell I was creating.
"What? Is Stefan grumpy from carrying Ray for too long?" I retorted getting a look from the vampire. I did not like what they had done to Ray at all. They were using him to get to more wolves, I was just glad that these wolves wouldn't be Hayley.
"No, Wren. I'm just tired, We've been hunting werewolves all summer and now they are all the way up a mountain." He responded. Okay, now I'm a bit hurt. Yes, they were looking for werewolves, not hunting.
"Okay. Ouch." I glared at Stefan, mainly hoping that he would fall. But no such luck. Stefan only looked back at the floor, no doubt annoyed at his own choice of words. I only bent down and looked him dead in the eye as I picked up more sticks and continued to light them.
"Are you sure Ray isn't getting too heavy?" Klaus suddenly asked, who knew the immortal hybrid had some sort of sympathy?
"I'm fine." The vampire got out through gritted teeth still looking at the ground.
"You sure about that? You know, we've been walking for quite some time now. If you need some water or a little sit-down..." Klaus trailed off, waiting for confirmation from Stefan only to be met with silence.
"Oh wow, the immortal hybrid showing some sort of twisted sympathy," Emery commented provoking Klaus who stared daggers at her. I only stood and laughed. "I'm surprised!" She exclaimed as Klaus continued staring.
"Emery shut up." I almost demanded jabbing her with my elbow in the ribs as she continued to provoke the hybrid. I could tell he was angry, purely on the way he held himself, his posture, the way he looked and spoke. He was rather easy to read but almost as if the words on the pages were all in the wrong order.
"Don't test him," I whispered into her ear as she only turned to look at me. "He would probably kill you and everyone you've ever met." I spoke calmly, more than aware that Klaus heard every word.
"Much to your interest," Klaus spoke up as he turned to look at us as we laughed. "I do show sympathy." He paused deciding his next words, "Only to those who show they deserve it." the hybrid only kept direct eye contact with me as he spoke, reading me as I read him.
I started to walk toward our eyes still connected, it felt like the world around us faded away, leaving just him and me in a bubble of shared understanding. His gaze held mine, drawing me in with its warmth and intensity. At that moment, it was as if we were speaking without words, our silent conversation revealing more than any conversation ever could. I found comfort and belonging in his eyes, a sense of connection that filled me with warmth and contentment.
It wasn't long before we reached the camp, to be honest, it wasn't that hard to find if you had a good sense of smell. Just find the smell of wet dogs. There were gasps and I'm pretty sure I heard a small scream as we approached with Ray carelessly slung over Stefan's shoulder, I only looked to Klaus who had the same sinister smirk on my face as I did. A woman eventually spoke up as Stefan dumped Ray onto the ground.
"Ray! Oh, my God." She exclaimed rushing over to the werewolf's body that was in a heap on the damp ground. "What's going on? Who are you?" She asked panicked looking up to Emery and I.
The arrogant hybrid shoved in between the pair of us making his presence known, only to his disappointment to receive confused looks from the pack. "The important question is who am I. Please forgive the intrusion. My name is Klaus." He announced proudly which gained fearful reactions from them as his sadistic smirk crawled back onto his face.
