DuBuis : Update on Spencer. Your son is doing well physically. The doctor wants him released to a rehab facility.
Doris : A what ? Rehab ? Whatever for ?
DuBuis : Because he is currently paralyzed from the waist down. Because he needs to learn how to adapt to his current new situation. That is whatever for. His life is different now. The facility is an excellent one. The best in the DC area. The staff there are top notch.
Doris : That is what you said about that hospital of yours. I think my son should have a second opinion. How could that surgeon have left the bullets in Spencer ? How could that surgeon have made my son into an useless cripple ? My son once was brilliant. Now look at him. He is nothing now. He's imperfect now. This is such abominable malpractice. I will have my lawyers sue that hospital of yours , Dr. Lane.
DuBuis : Dr. Horowitz is his doctor and she is exceptional. She doesn't make mistakes. His surgeon was Dr. Brian Pierson and he is the best. The best. These are my colleagues and I would trust them with my life. I would trust them with my mother's life. Dr. Horowitz came from Johns Hopkins. Dr. Pierson from Harvard. Brian removed two bullets but one was in a tricky position. If it was removed Spencer would have died. We would be burying him. I would be a widower. I agree with the choice Brian made. If you and your other children had bothered to come here we could have sat you all down and explained it to you. In detail. Where the hell were you ?
Doris : How dare you ? You common
DuBuis : You common what ? Go ahead. Say it. Say the word. I dare you. It starts with a N , right. I'm uppity right ? I'm rude right ? Go ahead. Say it. I've heard it before. How did Spencer ever come out of you ?
Doris : You people are so crude. Always playing the victim with the race card. Coming there would not have influenced his condition at all. Richard is a busy lawyer with a wife and three children. Lorraine is a busy woman with two children. I am very busy. We can not leave our lives to go hold his hand. Horowitz ? What kind of name is that ? Jewish ? I demand my son receive a second opinion. From a more acceptable doctor. The bullet needs to be removed as soon as possible so he can walk again and be productive again. My son is destined for greatness in the academic world. He will not be useless and imperfect.
DuBuis : I am done with you. You want updates call the hospital. Do not call Spencer. Again. He is very vulnerable now. The last thing he needs right now is your stupidity. And your bigotry. And your ignorance. Where did you get your medical degree ? I got mine from GW University.
Doris : Who exactly do you think you are , boy ?
DuBuis : I forgot. You missed our wedding. Who am I ? I am his husband. I am his best friend. I will be those two things until the day I die.
-----------------------------
Doris : Richard , that person who manipulated your brother into this so called marriage is quite impossible. As usual !
Richard : I don't know about that , Mother. I myself find Dr. Lane to be a much calming influence on Spencer. DuBuis seems to be a reasonable fellow. I do regret missing the wedding. Sarah planned our annual trip on that day. I should have canceled it. I should have went to the wedding. I regret that. He was shot on their anniversary.
Doris : Do concentrate , Richard. Honestly you do talk such nonsense at times. That creature is determined to keep me from my son. He is determined to keep my son as some useless vegetable. I demand you start working to get me power of attorney over Spencer and his medical treatment. That way I can get him proper care and remove that bullet so he can walk. You know just how special he is. Use that.
Richard : You can't do that , Mother. Spencer is hardly incompetent. He handles his life better than I do mine.
Doris : I can do whatever I want. I am Doris Van Burden Norland Carter Reilly Saunders. CEO and President of Van Burden Chocolates. What I want I always get. Get it done. Now. Or I will write you out of my will.
