We ran back the way we came and headed straight for the fire temple. We just had to hope we weren't too late. "Kai!" Cole yelled, trying to see if Kai would respond.
He didn't.
My chest tightened with fear bubbling inside of me. Would we already have to bury one of our own?
"Sensei!" Cole continued to yell, hoping to find at least one of them.
"The sword of fire was here. As well our friends. But I only sense loss. We are too late. " Zane said. I bit my lip. I was not going to cry. Not now. Not here. "The elemental weapons have left this realm and are now in the underworld. The end is drawing near." Cole groaned in frustration.
"Great. The one place no mortal can cross over." It really was the end.
Or at least, it seemed like it before we heard Kai's voice.
"We may not be able to cross over." The temple slid open, and we all backed up. Kai was there, with a girl I didn't know, on a dragon. A fucking dragon! Of course!
"But a dragon can!" We said together. The dragon roared, and Cole shrieked, running to hide behind a pillar. The others looked apprehensive to the idea, but not as terrified as Cole was.
"Our father used to tell us stories about the dragons." Nya said as Kai hopped off. "They were mystical creatures that belong to both worlds and ferried between them." Cole stammered.
"Are you insane?!"
"Once he realized we were trying to protect the sword of fire, he actually became quite a softy!" The dragon nuzzled him, and I smiled. Cute. "Hey, knock it off!" He said laughing. Nya laughed too.
Jay tried to ask if she liked blue, to which Zane translated. "He cannot speak, but he wants to know if you like the color blue?"
"It's my favorite color." A weak 'yes' was heard from Jay as he pumped his fist. Kai shook his head in disbelief as Nya hopped down.
"Nya?"
"This is goodbye, isn't it?" Kai nodded. "Come back to me in one piece, okay? I don't want to have to run the store on my own."
"I promise, I won't be gone for long." Kai said this, hopping back into the dragon.
"I'll leave a candle lit outside our shop until your return." While she said this, all of us but Cole got on the dragon. Cole was still hiding.
"You guys go on ahead. There's not enough room for all of us on that... thing." Nervousness was ever present in his voice saying that. The dragon glared at him.
"You're right Cole. But I've got a way to fix that." His said, mischief in his tone. I think I know where this is going.
And I was right, cause now we each have our own dragons. Cole was terrified though, not sitting properly and looking like he was about to freak out, if not already there. "Easy! not so fast!" He said, his tone shuddering.
"Aww, is the big baby scared of heights?" I teased.
"I'm scared of dragons, and not feeling solid ground beneath my feet!" He defended. "I rock climb, I don't fly!" I laughed, speeding up a bit.
"C'mon guys! Keep up!" Jay shrieked in joy.
"This is awesome!"
"Yes, this is quite fun." Zane said, robotic as ever. Jay whooped as we continued to soar.
"So how do the dragons cross over to the underworld?" The dragons backed up for a sec.
"I think we're about to find out!" The dragons all nose-dived towards the ground, and we all screamed. Is this what a roller coaster feels like? It's amazing! As we got closer to the ground, the dragons started to spin, creating a mini tornado at the end of their noses. As we got closer to the ground, we all screamed in terror now, and closed our eyes. Or, at least, Cole and I did.
