I stumbled around the forest, uselessly.
See, I had no idea where we were.
"Hey ah, Dad? Where are we?" I called.
"A hunting ground in just outside of New Orleans." He called back.
It was weird to hear his familiar voice coming from such a non familiar figure.
With short brown hair, no ears, and not a single red thing in sight, I'm sure you can understand my confusion.
Mom on the other hand, looked a lot more normal.
She had big blue eyes instead of black ones, other than that, her hair was pretty normal and her dress was slightly similar to her old one.
Part of me wondered if since I had black eyes, If I had blue ones like her, or brown ones like Dad.
I walked into a tree.
BONK.
The hollow thud echoed around the forest.
"Okay, OW!" I complained.
I could see very well that Dad was trying extremely hard not to laugh as he kneeled down next to me. "Are you alright darling?"
Mom wasn't even trying to hide it and was full on cackling next to us.
I rubbed my head. "I guess, but look! These stupid human eyes suck! I can't see anything!"
Dad shook his head. "True, but, I already was having problems seeing, so going back to being a human after having deer eyes for so long is a nightmare."
I nodded. "Yeah I suppose."
Mom stopped laughing. "Maybe you both need better glasses."
I scrunched up my nose. "Glasses?"
Mom shrugged. "Hey, just saying."
Dad laughed and pulled me to my feet. "We should be on our way."
I blew out a breath and nodded. "Yeah I wanna see New Orleans!"
And we walked.
To our surprise, almost no one was... anywhere.
The streets looked deserted.
Mom put a finger on her chin. "I wonder where everyone is... Al do you know?"
Dad crossed his arms. "Nope."
I looked at them suspiciously. "What? What is it?"
Dad laughed and grabbed my hand, pulling me down the street. "Come and you'll find out!"
We rounded a street corner and I gasped.
Colors, Lights, Streamers, Beads, Noise.
The chaos was... wonderful.
That was the first word that came to my mind.
Wonderful.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" Dad asked.
I nodded slowly, not taking my eyes off the parade.
Mom walked up to us with a fond smile. "Mardi Gras, the most magnificent time of year here in Louisiana."
My jaw hung agape.
Gold, purple, and green were all the colors I saw. With floats, Dancers, and soo much more, I didn't know where to look.
Someone tugged on my hand.
When my eyes finally found them, I realized that it was the dancers, trying to pull me in.
I smiled, "Um no thank you..."
"You see my dear, Louisianan's don't take no for an answ-"
Someone yanked Dad into the crowd
In my moment of surprise, the boy dancer pulled on my arm and tugged me into the chaos.
He twirled me around and I want to say that I danced with like, ten different people.
The girl that had my hands was swept away by someone else and I had a second to breath.
Someone grabbed my hand, yet again, twirling me around.
Once more!
"Do you mind?"
I stopped spinning and I found that Dad had my hand.
I smiled. "Not at all!"
And we took off.
His dancing skill amazed me.
I had heard stories, from Mom, from Aunt Charlie, from the folks in Cannibal Town, but never seen them myself.
Now that I had, I understood the need to tell someone about it.
He was amazing, twirling, and dipping me as if I weighed nothing.
Dad looked genuinely happy to be there.
I smiled, whatever else my parents had in store, I was sure I was going to like it.
