THE ARRANGEMENT
It was the spring of 1972 when cherry blossoms adorned the campus with their delicate pink hues.
Lisa and Taehyun, both in their third years of medical school, often crossed paths during the demanding schedule of classes and exams.
One afternoon, Lisa found herself seated in the living room of her parents' house later that day, with Taehyun and his parents already present.
The atmosphere was charged with formality, unlike their usual family gatherings.
After some initial small talk about the changing seasons and shared community events, Yoonseok cleared his throat gently, a signal that the conversation was about to take a more serious turn.
Yoonseok began, his tone warm yet decisive. "We've been friends for many years, and our families have shared countless memories and milestones together."
Sungmin and his wife nodded graciously, their expressions supportive.
Looking between Lisa and Taehyun, Yoonseok continued, "Lisa, Taehyun, we've witnessed your growth into remarkable persons. There's a deep connection and genuine respect between you both."
"Absolutely," Sungmin added, his voice gentle but resolute. "Given our families' history and the connection you share, we believe it's time to take the next step. Therefore, we've decided that you two should become engaged."
Lisa's heart raced as she glanced at Taehyun, hoping for a reassuring look or some sign of understanding.
Instead, she found frustration in his eyes, quickly turning to anger.
"Why wasn't I informed about this earlier?" Taehyun demanded, his tone tinged with annoyance.
"Taehyun, please mind your manners," Mrs. Kym interjected, exchanging a glance with her husband. "We thought it would be a pleasant surprise for both of you. This decision has been discussed within our families for some time."
"Pleasant surprise?" Taehyun scoffed. "This is a major life decision, you guys know that."
Yoonseok spoke up, his voice firm yet gentle. "We understand it's a lot to take in. This is about solidifying our families' bond and ensuring a secure future for both you and Lisa."
"But Uncle, we're still in school," Taehyun argued. "We have so much going on right now."
Mrs. Kym remained steadfast. "We're not expecting you to marry immediately. This engagement is a commitment. A promise to each other and our families. You can continue to focus on your studies and take your time."
Taehyun sighed deeply. "It just feels like we're being pushed into something. Can't we make our own decisions?"
"Son," Sungmin leaned forward, his voice calm yet authoritative. "Think of this engagement as an opportunity rather than a restriction. It signifies a strong support system behind you, and guiding you toward a stable future."
