[ thirty-two. the path to forgiveness]

CASSIA SIGHED AS she flipped the shop's 'closed' sign. Oak and Cassia got to cleaning as soon as the last customer left, both exhausted. The boy was finishing sweeping when Cassia moved to lock the door to Willow's workshop and she was left wondering if the girl was in the orphanage already. The thought made her a bit sorrowful. Maybe she should've been a bit more gentle with her.

They hurried to leave and Cassia noticed that Oak walked in the same direction as her. Yesterday she left earlier than both Oak and Willow and although she had a fair understanding of where the orphanage was located, due to Hazel's ramblings when she accompanied her to the market, she was totally clueless about Oak's residence. She guessed he lived alone.

"You live on that side too?" Cassia asked in an attempt to make small talk. The boy was puzzling. He seemed talkative at some moments but then he quickly pushed the friendliness away.

Like he was embarrassed to even think of enjoying her company. It was probably because she was Capitol, his behavior reminded her of Treech at the beginning of their journey.  But that was understandable.

She hoped the small talk would help him see she wasn't so bad.

"Yeah, I don't live too far from the Evans'. Thought I should accompany you home since it's late" He answered and Cassia smiled.

"Thank you. Are you sure you aren't doing it 'cause you hope Treech will talk to you?" She teased and the boy looked away to hide his embarrassment of being caught.

Once again silence overtook them until Cassia decided to talk again, it was becoming a custom at this point.

"You'll have to tell me what you did to make him so mad, you know?"

"So you can pick a side?" Oak raised his eyebrow hopefully.

"Oh no, I'm always on Treech's side. I just wanna know how much you deserve to be cussed out until I intervene." Cassia informed making the boy chuckle.

"That's not very encouraging."

"So, what did you do?" Cassia finally asked.

He took a moment to think about how to phrase it.

Cassia took the initiative to talk again. "It was because of what happened to Lamina, wasn't it?"

"No...I mean not really. Gossip quickly spread when Lamina died. I don't have a tv and neither do the common folk. It's mostly some merchants that spread the word that Treech left Lamina. But I wasn't angry. I don't know what I would do if I were in his shoes" He spoke slowly and Cassia guessed it was to steady his voice. He did work with her after all.
