[ eighteen. the day that was ]
TREECH'S VOICE WAS strained when he shouted "Mizzen, wait!" The boy stopped and turned to face him. "I'll go," He said, turning to Coral with the most confident smile he could muster.
Coral didn't look convinced or pleased with his sudden willingness. She raised an eyebrow but didn't question him "Whatever, just get her out of there, lumberjack"
Treech entered the arena but stopped in his tracks when he caught sight of the boy from Eleven, kneeling next to all the corpses. For a moment their eyes locked but neither attempted to attack.
The lumberjack grabbed a lengthy spear and easily climbed the rubble. He kneeled and stared inside, trying to see the girl. Once he noticed the rainbow puffs of her dress he forced the spear inside with a grunt.
He heard a gasp from the vent and he repeated the action.
"Come on little bird" He mumbled, wanting nothing more than to get this done.
He finally heard her moving inside the vent. He slammed the spear more times, just to make sure she was scared enough.
Coral probably expected him to come down by now, but Treech had made up his mind the moment he saw Mizzen walk away.
They were done.
CASSIA RAN INSIDE the auditorium, Snow close behind her. She immediately rushed to Festus and Persephone both were standing and watching the screen intensely.
Dread filled her when she saw the scene. Mizzen and Coral were by the entrance, still waiting for Lucy Gray to come down. She scanned her communipad but Treech's face was still there, meaning he was still alive.
"Where's Treech?" Asked Cassia panicked.
Festus was too focused to even turn to her when he mumbled a quick "Went to scare Lucy Gray out."
"What the hell?!" Persephone exclaimed which made Cassia turn to her. "Something is wrong with Mizzen." She pointed at the boy.
It was true. The boy kept rubbing his eyes and nose.
"Coral..." He said in a weak voice but his district partner was too distracted with the girl in the vent. She kept stabbing the vent with her pitchfork, oblivious to the struggling boy.
She finally noticed him when he fell to his knees and it was clear now that his nose was bleeding, staining his sweater.
Just like Dill...
Cassia sent a glare to Snow but he was too concentrated on the scene. She didn't know what Lucy Gray did but she was more than sure that he had something to do with it.
