Chapter 17

Alhaitham sighed as he shook his head, dropping the evidence folder to the table. Albedo who is experimenting on the rat with the hyacinth flowers from the changeling power to see how it works raised his head. Alhaitham rests his muscular body on the sofa while massaging his forehead, and furrowing his eyebrows. Xiao stayed quiet as he sharpened his spear and stared at Alhaitham blankly before he began to speak.

"Is it about the changeling?" Xiao questioned, Alhaitham nodded slowly as he removed his hand from the table.

Alhaitham took out a small notebook and skimmed through the pages. There were thousands of lists of books he went through in the past few days to search for the Changeling species but he couldn't find a single piece of information about them, not even one bit. This frustrated him.

Albedo who noticed his frustration stopped experimenting on the rats, he took off his gloves and washed his hands. The running water could be Heard from the distance, washing away the hyacinth petals that got stuck to his hands. Good thing the scent isn't strong so no one could smell it.

"The Changeling species is nowhere to be found in any books, the media only release information about the murders they've done, as if that Changeling person isn't supposed to exist." Alhaitham rants as he closes his notebook while lying on the couch.

Xiao squinted his eyes, he couldn't be wrong about the aura he felt around the Changeling, his detection aura is always right, yet why is there no single information about this species? The Changeling IS from this world, he could feel it in their aura. His thoughts wander a bit.

"Could it be that their species is not recorded by the historians? Those Cases usually happen sometimes right?" Xiao concluded

Albedo turned around, preparing Coffee for Alhaitham. While that could be possible it rarely happened, usually, when there are no historians that record it, It would be stored in literature from legends to novels yet... it's quite odd that this species isn't recorded anywhere in the Tevyat Library, not even the Sumeru's Archives record any information about them.

Alhaitham shook his head, disagreeing with Xiao; 's conclusion. That can't happen, yet why is this case different? Albedo put the coffee on the table, handing it to Alhaitham who was ruffling his hair. Alhaitham perked up and gazed at Albedo who was gazing at him with concern.

"You should take some rest Haith," Albedo suggested, Alhaitham who had bags under his eyes sighed and drank the coffee that Albedo prepared for him.

He backed away and threw himself into the sofa feeling its velvety yet thick texture of it, being drowned by the coziness. Albedo stared at the report papers that were toiling at his desk. He shuffled through the mess, cleaning it up.

Xiao who saw Albedo cleaning got up from his place, he quickly organized the papers in the blink of an eye. Albedo's eyes widened before turning to a small smile. 

"I appreciate the help Xiao."

Xiao didn't say anything, nodding in acknowledgment. Albedo noticed something under the piles of papers, a book that had a seal locked onto it tightly. He carefully pulled the book out of the stack, the book had a brown cover with some sort of monster craved in the middle of it. A lock was hanging on the side of the book, begging for someone to open it.

Albedo dusted off the dirt that was on the book,  he analyzed the book carefully, it was pretty heavy to carry, and the phrase: "Mystical Species." is engraved on the book delicately. Despite it being around 100 years old, it was still in good condition.

"Have you tried to unlock the seal of this book?" Albedo questioned.

Alhaitham who was about to sleep, woke up. He got up from his position and squinted his eyes, trying to get a good view of the book.

"I've tried a couple of different techniques but it wouldn't budge," Alhaitham responded before laying his head on the sofa cushion. Albedo hummed before turning his attention to Alhaitham.

"Could you call your brother?"
