Her phone rang

"Hello"

"Hey Mia, it's Saanvi. I miss you"

"..."

"Are you okay? you haven't been to school after... you know, your mother's-'

"I'm fine"

"Are you sure?"

"Yah"

"Do you want me to come over?"

"No. I'm fine...really. I just need some time"

"Alright. Take care and if you need someone to talk to, I'm always here for you. "

"Of Course"

The phone hung up.

It's been five days since the fire. Five days since her death.

Mia had never realized just how cold her home was. How could she when there was always someone there warming it up for her?

Even during the coldest months when the heater stopped working and outside was below 0℃, her mother would always be there to make her warm chocolate, start up the fireplace or pull her into a warm hug. But now she was gone and Mia has never felt so cold, despite it being the middle of spring. it just wasn't the same.

She would never get to feel her mother's special type of warmth again and now she had to learn how to live with that fact. The fact that she's all alone.

No Father. No mother. No other family members to run to. It's just her and Mylo all alone in this large empty house.

"What should I do now?". Was a question she's been trying not to think about. What could she do? Leave? It wasn't that simple.

This cold empty house was too precious to discard as it held items that reminded her of her life five days ago. Like the kitchen counter where she would sit every morning to have breakfast while watching her mom get ready for work, or the bookshelf in her room filled with old books her mother used to read to her for bedtime when she was a small child.

These seemingly meaningless everyday objects became mementos of what her life used to be.

she wasn't ready to leave all that behind. But the mortgage was due soon, so were the other bills, and then there was the funeral expenses that needed to be covered, but with what money?

All of these issues that usually her mother would solve were piling up. So she resorted to what she would usually do when there was a big problem: turn off the lights, curl up into a ball on the couch with blankets, watch TV and hope everything would fix itself.

That's what she's been doing since it all happened. Too sad to sit. Too  sad to walk.  Too sad  to eat. All  she does is cry and sleep

News anchor:  Police are still investigating the cause of the fire that happened at Clarence Labs this Monday that ended the life of 41-year-old Rosa Ingrid. So far they have found evidence that the room in which her body was found was where the fire started. Though no cause has been determined yet, most speculate it could have just been an accident

"No. It's not an accident!" Mia shouted at the TV as if the news anchor could hear her. "It doesn't make sense. Someone had to do it!". She had no evidence but something in her gut told her there was more to what happened.

Suddenly, Mylo barked, showing up in front of Mia.

"Hey boy," she said, running her fingers through his golden fur. That's when she realized he had something in his mouth.

"Mylo drop it" she gently demanded from him, which he did and let go of the object in his mouth. It was the necklace.

Mia picked it up and inspected it. "Mama's Necklace..". She stared at it, wondering how the purple gem at the end of the still kept its shine despite being in a fire.

When it was around her mother's neck, she never paid any mind to it. It was just another ordinary necklace after all, right? Her mind went back to the morning of that horrible day.

It was a morning like every other. Her and Saanvi were at the kitchen counter, she saw the purple gem glow as her mom got ready. When she asked her about it, she said it was nothing, but that only made her more suspicious of the thing, especially with how her mom was acting that day. But with all the recent events, she had no time to think about it, until now.

"What a weird necklace," Mia thought to herself as she continued looking at it. Her mind went from how weird it was, to how pretty it was the longer she kept staring at it.

She never got the chance to see it up close since it was always around her mother's neck for as long as she could remember. Mia couldn't even imagine seeing her without it. It was like it was a part of her.

That's why she decided to put it on. Clipping the ends of the pearls together with the bayonet clasps, tears ran down her face once again as she thought of her mother. This was the only thing left of her.

The tears continued until she was fully bawling her eyes out. Mylo came to comfort her, placing his head on her neck and she hugged him tight.

"what are we going to do Mylo?" she sobbed, her tears damping  the dog's fur "what do we do"

Then suddenly the doorbell rang.

"Hello" she peered her head out the door, after wiping her tears

"Good afternoon. I'm Angela Forester, from child protective services" the blond woman said with a bright smile "We're aware you've recently lost your mother and you're underage, but fortunately, there's already someone here who is willing to take you in"

She moved to the side, revealing that there was a man with her.

"Hello, Mia. You remember me right?. Your uncle Takahashi."
