Crossroads | Sookai

Chapter 1

Taehyun and Huening Kai take their usually seat toward the front of the class.  The room is filled with people talking, laughing, and even some napping. The rustling of student's backpacks and notebooks could be heard along with the tapping of keyboards. A normal day on their campus. On the other hand, Huening Kai was sulking while Taehyun was just there, doing his best to console his roommate.

"Taehyun....who made me major in film and visual arts...." He puts his head down in his arms.

"I know your sad about the upcoming quiz and all but...you kinda brought this yourself..."  Taehyun trailed off, attempting to make the situation more light hearted. Kai snapped his head and looked at him with a scoff, earning a smirk in return. Not too long after he went back to sulking, putting his head down on the table.

At the back entrance of the lecture hall, two students enter in seemingly close to when class would start.

"Aish, Soobin, why did you wake up so late today?" His close friend lectured him.

"I just couldn't sleep well last night...sorry Yeonjun," he rubs his eyes, still appearing he didn't get out of bed not too long ago. His hair was slightly disheveled and slight bags were forming under his eyes. Yeonjun sighs but leads him to the front of the class, sitting behind two familiar people.

Not too long after the professor enters and starts class quickly, urging the students pull out their notes from the previous class. The lecture starts and Yeonjun snickers as he crumples up an old paper and throws it at the boy in front of him. It hits him in the back if the head and he quickly turns back frowning, revealing to be Huening Kai.

"Heh, gotcha" Yeonjun said quietly, holding his laugh back.

"Dude what the heck," he says with a pout. The professor starts speaking again making Kai quickly turn back to his notes. Soobin saw the whole thing go down and suddenly a thought occurred to him. Heh...he's kinda cute...wait what?? When he snapped back into reality, their shenanigans were already over and everyone was taking notes.

They reach a slower part of the lesson and when the professor turns around to write on the board, Soobin gives a slight nudge to Yeonjun. "So...do you know him?" He asks, obviously referring to Huening Kai, but Yeonjun caught on quickly.

"Oh nuh uh, I'm not letting you taint his innocent soul" Soobin raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean taint???" he asks slightly offended.

"C'mon, we both know the reason you woke up late wasn't because you didn't sleep well,"  Yeonjun fired back.

Soobin sighed as Yeonjun had a point. He is his best friend ever since high school so he became the first and only person he told about his life at night. With that information, Yeonjun wasn't gonna let Soobin get to know Huening Kai so easily. At least for the moment.

"Not even his name?" Soobin whined.

Yeonjun shook his head earning a groan in response. For the rest of class, Soobin was gloomy and made it pretty obvious. He mostly looked down and contemplated about the boy who recently caught his attention, at times sneaking some glances at him. Occasionally Kai would turn back to speak to Yeonjun, who blatantly left Soobin out of the conversation. Little did he know, but Huening Kai noticed Soobin and his glum attitude.

At the end of class, everyone was rushing out, including Yeonjun and Soobin, but to Soobin's surprise, he felt a small tug on his sleeve. He looked over to see it was Huening Kai infront of him, with a sweet but concerned smile.

"I noticed you seemed sad so maybe this can help?" He held out his hand which had a Snickers in it. His voice was soft, and his dark brown eyes were full of warmth and sincerity

"For me?" he asked surprised, pointing to himself. Kai nodded in return. He took the chocolate bar from the boy and flashed him a dimpled smile.

"Thank you" He said in a sweet voice, feeling his heart fluttering from the boy's sincerity. It made Kai unconsciously smile in return.

"Well see you around Yeonjun's friend!" he did a small wave with a cute smile and left with Taehyun. Just like that, Soobin was whipped for the boy. He looked over at Yeonjun and he sighed since he already knew what Soobin was gonna say.

"Please can I at least get his name? I'm begging you," he put his hands together and looked at his best friend sincerely. He contemplated this for a while until eventually he sighed again.

"Huening Kai. That was Huening Kai," Soobin started smiling again and was jumping from excitement.

"THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU" he exclaimed. Some people that were still leaving gave him weird looks but he didn't really care since he's just happy he could put a name to an adorable face.

While they were a leaving the lecture hall, Yeonjun couldn't help but smile a little as the situation since he hadn't seen Soobin smile like that in a long time.

Maybe Kai could inspire him to leave his other life behind...he ponders. And just like that, he decided he'll help Soobin achieve his goal of getting to know Kai better, finally crossing the two roads that were distant but didn't seem so far now.
