“paper messages”౨ৎ
after the division meet, the council officers are back to being busy preparing for their upcoming foundation day. they want that day to be memorable because it is now the last highschool year of their seniors, including heeseung.
even though yeoji and sunghoon are in the same class, sunghoon is always excused because of some council meetings, preparing designs, pubmats and whatever else needed to make their event successful.
that's why, yeoji only sees him twice or thrice every week. once she spotted in her room window that sunghoon is coming home late.
"he must be tired in working hard for the event."
yeoji sighed as she sat by her window, flipping through her notes. it had been another long day at school, and she missed the easy camaraderie she used to share with sunghoon. now, with the council meetings and event preparations, their interactions were fleeting and rare.
as she gazed out of her window, she spotted sunghoon trudging down in his study table. their room windows are definitely infront of each other that's why he saw him. his shoulders were slumped, and he looked utterly exhausted. she felt a pang of sympathy and admiration. he was working so hard for the event, and she wished she could help somehow.
must then, sunghoon glanced up and their eyes met. he stopped in his tracks, a tired but genuine smile spreading across his face. yeoji couldn't help but smile back. she grabbed a notepad and scribbled quickly, holding the paper up to the window.
"are you okay?"
sunghoon laughed softly and nodded. he rummaged through his bag and pulled out a notebook, writing something in response. he held up his own message.
"just tired. how about you?"
yeoji's heart fluttered at the simple interaction. she wrote back,
"i'm fine. miss seeing you in class."
sunghoon's eyes softened. he wrote again in reply,
"miss you too. can’t wait for the event to be over."
yeoji chuckled and scribbled,
"then we can hang out more?"
sunghoon's smile widened, and he gave her a thumbs-up before writing,
"definitely! need help with homework?"
she shook her head and replied,
"no, but thanks. just get some rest."
sunghoon nodded, holding up a final message,
"will do. good night, yeoji ♡"
she responded also with,
"good night, sunghoon."
as sunghoon walked away, yeoji felt a warmth in her chest. it wasn't much, but these little silly interactions made her feel closer to him despite the distance his responsibilities created. she closed her window, her heart lighter, looking forward to the day they would have more time for each other.
the next morning, yeoji decided to do something to cheer sunghoon up. she knew he had a sweet tooth and always appreciated her homemade cookies. so, she spent her saturday morning in the kitchen, baking a batch of his favorite chocolate chip cookies. as the sweet aroma filled the house, she carefully packed them in a small box, tying it with a blue ribbon.
in the afternoon, yeoji took the box of cookies and walked over to sunghoon’s house. she hesitated for a moment before ringing the doorbell. after a few moments, the door opened to reveal sunghoon’s grandmother. good thing sunghoon's grandmother knows her because they just live next to each other's house.
“good afternoon, halmeonim,” yeoji greeted with a warm smile. “i baked some cookies for sunghoon. is he home?”
“oh, yeoji, dear! how sweet of you,” his grandmother replied, her eyes crinkling with a smile. “sunghoon isn’t home yet. he always comes home late, even in the weekends.”
yeoji’s heart sank a little, but she quickly masked her disappointment with a smile. “that’s alright. could you give these to him when he gets back?”
“of course, dear. i’m sure he’ll be delighted,” the grandmother said, taking the box of cookies. “you’re such a thoughtful friend.”
yeoji blushed slightly. “thank you, halmeonim. i just wanted to do something nice for him. he’s been working so hard.”
the grandmother nodded knowingly. “he has indeed. i’ll make sure he gets these. thank you again, yeoji.”
yeoji waved goodbye and walked back home, feeling a mix of happiness and anticipation. she hoped the cookies would bring a smile to sunghoon’s face and give him a little boost during his busy days.
