The sensei stood speechless, grappling with the gravity of the day's events. A mission that should have been a routine exercise had turned into a nightmare: one student's negligence led to another's death, and the resulting fury ended in further tragedy. Despite their strength, the team had been torn apart.
The walk back to Konoha was a silent march of despair. Reina carried Kiyomi's lifeless body in her arms, her face devoid of emotion. When the sensei tried to speak, Reina remained silent, lost in her own world.
Reina's mind replayed the events in an endless loop: Kagari's casual question, the sudden attack, Kiyomi's fall, and the cold satisfaction of avenging her sister. She felt no remorse—only a cold certainty that she had done what was necessary. Kagari had the chance to save Kiyomi but failed. If he hadn't been a Hyūga, she might have targeted his family next.
As they neared Konoha, the silence grew oppressive. "Reina," the sensei finally said, "I know you're in pain, but we need to report to the Sandaime."
Reina glanced at her but said nothing, her steps unwavering. Villagers stared, whispering, as they saw her carrying the corpse. Ninja tried to stop her, questioning her, but she ignored them all.
Entering her home, she saw her mother at the table. "Oh? I didn't think you'd b—" Her mother's voice faltered as she saw Kiyomi. Tears welled up as she ran to Reina, gently taking Kiyomi's body.
"Kiyomi!" she cried, her voice breaking. Reina stood, staring blankly, as her mother's hope died when she saw the Sharingan in Reina's eyes.
Reina turned and left the house without a word, heading to the Hokage Monument. She found her sensei and the Sandaime waiting.
"There's Reina," the Sandaime said. "Where are Kiyomi and Kagari?"
"They're dead," Reina said flatly. "Kagari's negligence led to Kiyomi's death. And his own as well."
The Sandaime's eyes widened in shock. "Kagari got her killed? How, and how did that lead to his own death?"
The sensei began to speak, but Reina's glare silenced her. "Kagari saw the enemy shinobi with his Byakugan but refused to inform us. They were to the left of the team, which made Kiyomi closest to them." Reina paused, letting the gravity of her words sink in.
"He then distracted Kiyomi. Taking advantage of the opening, the enemy shinobi ambushed us, fatally wounding Kiyomi. Angered, I killed the attackers swiftly before turning back to Kiyomi. Sensei—Miyako—tried to heal her but wasn't skilled enough." She stopped again, her voice steady but cold.
"Kagari got my sister killed. It was only right he paid for what he took from me."
The Sandaime was flabbergasted. "You killed him?!" Reina nodded. "Surely you understand that wasn't the right thing to do! Yes, his actions were foolish, but he was still a shinobi of Konoha!"
Reina nodded, her voice icy. "You are correct, Sandaime-sama. His life could never possess the same value as Kiyomi's. I should have let him live and slowly killed everyone he cared about, one by one." Hiruzen stared at her, speechless.
Finally, he found his voice. "Ignoring that psychotic statement, do you realize what you've done? As an Uchiha, you killed a Hyūga clan member. The cousin of the heir, specifically. This could start a civil war!"
Reina remained silent.
"Listen," Hiruzen continued, his tone grave, "I understand your grief and rage, but this cannot go unpunished. Miyako, you're barred from teaching genin teams. Uchiha Reina, your status as a shinobi of Konoha is revoked. You will live as an ordinary citizen. Understood?"
