POV: Bree
Stunned.
I was stunned by all the people who were simultaneously greeting and congratulating me. I was like a deer in headlights. I expected everyone to be excited, but this was definitely something else. Family. Friends. Loved ones. Except there wasn't the one person I wanted to see in this huge crowd of faces. The one person who actually could be here when I otherwise thought she wouldn't be able to make it due to her career.
I sighed sadly.
I spotted James on the horizon walking over, to no doubt due his part. I wrapped my arms around him in a big hug. It was like trying to wrap your arms around a grizzly bear. It was impossible for someone like me, but I still tried.
"Congratulations, Bree. Finally, putting some roots down. I'm happy for you." James said with a big goofy smile on his face.
"Thanks James. But I thought Liv was here too?" I asked, wondering where my best friend had gone.
I knew James would know where Liv was. They were close – two peas in a pod - since they shared a profession.
"You know, for once I don't know. She was literally just here shacked up nursing a beer." James said honestly.

James did know where Olivia was.
James just knew better to say anything about where their mutual friend was.
James also knew his friend was probably an absolute wreck right about now. He wanted to be by her side, but didn't want to alarm Bree that anything was wrong.
He was being pulled in two directions.
And what was he supposed to say?
Hey Bree! Liv was shattering into a million pieces because the one she loves – AKA you – is getting married. But hey! It's no biggie.
Yeah...
Fuck. No

"Maybe I should see where she ran off to. Hell, maybe she had to use the bathroom? I know for a fact she was having a little too much fun earlier." James said with a wink.
"Yeah. Ok. Just let me know when you find her, ok?" I said, still a little annoyed, that my best friend couldn't be bothered to congratulate me.
Guess she apparently has other things to attend to right now. It's only the day where I announced my engagement! No big deal!
I watched James hurry in a flurry through the double doors back into the house.
Hopeful he'd drag her ass back out here so they could finally be re-united.
"So? He finally popped the question, eh?" Jess asked inquisitively.
My attention finally came back to the topic at hand, so I focused on the question my friend had asked.
"Yes, it was just- just wow. I was so surprised." I said.
I looked down at my engagement ring and fiddled with it.
Yes, I was surprised indeed, and it really wasn't that amazing. More spur of the moment than anything else. Henry wasn't a romantic by any stretch of the imagination.
For the lack of better words...
I settled.
I knew that I was getting older and the one person I loved with all my heart was unobtainable. I wanted kids and a family, so when someone came along and said they wanted that too... Well, I jumped at the opportunity. It just so happened that that one person came back at exactly the same time I got engaged.
