SHAWN DONNELY
~~“Do not worry, Mr. Donnelly. As long as you have me, no harm is coming to you. My men would continue to guard you from a distance and keep on investigating to see if anyone is on your trail.” Sunny sighed. “However, permit me to relay my deduction of the situation from my experience as an expert in this field.” The look on Sunny’s face was too serious to not catch Shawn’s interest.
Shawn said he wanted to hear and then, Sunny began his hypothesis.
“Considering the fact that you did not show up at the office today, it was enough bait to lure any spy on our trail out if there were any as the COO would be more suspicious. This is the time they ought to increase their inspection and not deter. But since you suspect that nonetheless, I will continue the investigation in that area too.” Sunny said.
All of this, Shawn already knew. “You’ve mentioned some of these before, Sunny. I thought you were going to say something new.” Shawn almost snapped.
“Yes, yes, Mr. Donnelly. I deduce that the spy is someone very close to you. Someone who works for you and secretly works for the COO too. Someone you know told him about your date.” Sunny professed and Shawn’s jaw tightened.
He went thoughtful for a while, processing the information before he could even think about it. He had always thought he surrounded himself with the best people.
There was a possibility that one of them could be spying on him.
“H—how sure are you about that, Sunny?” His voice almost broke as he asked.
Sunny’s eyes squinted. “Considering the odds, I’d say a eighty-five percent out of a hundred.” He said.
Shawn felt a lump growing in his throat. “And who do you think that could be?” Shawn asked. If anything at all, he was quick to accept reality for what it was.
“It doesn't entirely mean that it is one of the people closest to you. It could be one of the maids, a worker in the estate, and—it could also be one of those two closest to you.” Sunny elucidated.
Shawn didn't like the sound of that. He didn't want to think of the possibility. Yet, his confidence in Sunny’s expertise wouldn't let him oust the information.
A corner of his mouth quivered up as he slightly repeatedly punched a fist softly on his own mouth. “Sunny?” He called the private investigator who was closely watching him.
“Mr. Donnelly?” Sunny called back.
Shawn looked at him now. His jaw clenched as he hated to say what he intended to say but he had no choice. “Plant your men in the estate. Let them watch the mansion closely too.” And then, the inevitable proved harder. “Watch Gina and Landers closely too. I would not tolerate betrayal of any sort.” He declared, feeling like a sly.
He did once betray an innocent girl. He had grown to despise betrayal ever since.
“Understood, Mr. Donnelly. I will work on it straight away.” Sunny stood to stand up but then halted. “How about the Whitakers?”
Shawn looked at him. “They want time. Let's give it to them for now.” He instructed. He’d wait. No matter how long, he’d wait.
“Roger that. Bye, sir.” Sunny replied and walked out of the study.
Shawn fell deeply in thought. They wanted those documents but they’d never get their hands on them. Whoever Sinclair was using against him, he would catch every one of them and show no mercy.
If he must, he would order for Sinclair’s execution too. In business, one’s hand must get dirty with blood to smell money.
He stood up and turned to the bookshelves behind him. His fingers began to trace every book until he got to it.
The one which he had replaced its contents with the documents. He had them stapled into the pages as though they were the real book.
‘The Weightiness of Guilt’ reads the title.
It used to be his favorite book since he bought this estate. It had helped him a lot in navigating his guilt.
Now, none of Sinclair’s men could break into his estate or get past the heavy security in it. None of them.
They wouldn't expect him to carelessly drop it around too. He found the best place to safeguard it and he’d been doing it well.
He took out the book, and read its contents. All of his illegal deals, the damages and everything, they were all in it.
He slumped into his chair and thundered with a roaring sinister laughter.
“Let them come,” A muscle in his jaw twitched. “I, Shawn, would destroy every single one of them. Sinclair, your days are numbered.” He whispered to himself before returning his fit of laughter.
Bastard, that Sinclair.
As Shawn rose to return to his room, he thought of how easy it’d be to destroy the documents themselves had they not been important.
It was like buying a house and then, losing the credentials that were shreds of evidence of ownership.
The only thing he bought with clean money was his estate. If the documents were destroyed, he would lose the rights to the rest of his properties – everything that made him a billionaire.
If the cops get their hands on it too, he’d end up behind bars. The only option left was to safeguard it.
He would kill everyone who knew about it if he must, except for Serenity, of course. She was too naive to be a problem. He had no idea why he told her about it but there was this freedom he had with her. Like he could be himself without restraints.
Shawn returned to his room, took a bath, and was ready to start working on his laptop when he dozed up.
This time, he dreamt of Serenity holding a gun at him.
It was coincidental how it was her call that woke him up. He checked the time and saw that it was evening already.
Scratching his eyes, “Damn. How long did I sleep for?” He yawned before picking up the call.
He made sure to sound as lively and charming as possible when he spoke to Serenity though. He was trying to impress the lady. She was the only escape he had in this frustrating period.
Only she made him feel like a boy without problems.
