I finally got home.
I tried my best to hide my tear-stained face, bursting the door to the living room wide open, startling Alice in the process.
"Oh, Snugglebug!" Alice held her chest, breathing out in relief. "I forgot to lock the door. You scared me!"
I wish I could banter with Alice right now and forget all my worries, but she was able to read me too easily.
"Serenity?" For the first time in a long time, Alice called me by my name. I looked at her eyes, seeing the worry behind them. "Your eyes... have you been crying again?"
I felt my body tremble, my body weight suddenly becoming too overwhelming. The tears poured out freely soon after, as I fell to the ground sobbing.
"Oh, Snugglebug!" Alice rushed to hug me, moving faster than one would expect from a heavily pregnant woman. "What happened? Is Shawn okay? Are your parents okay? Please, I hate seeing you like this, talk to me."
I felt like I was suffocating as I struggled to breathe. I sniffled as I tried taking in quick deep breaths to calm my aching heart down.
"H- he- he broke-up with me." I managed to speak, in in-between sobs. The tears came out even stronger now, as I clutched my chest tightly like that would heal the pain. It didn't.
"Oh, no! Snugglebug, I'm so sorry." Alice hugged me even tighter now, brushing my hair ever so gently with her fingers.
We both sat down on the ground in silence, the only sound made being my sobs as I still struggled to catch my breath.
After what seemed like ages, a thought crossed my mind. Poor Alice! She was here sitting on the ground with her pregnancy because of me.
"Alice, let's go sit down on the couch. You can cuddle me there." I tried to joke with a dry laugh, coughing loudly in the process.
"Yikes! All this cause of a man?" Alice giggled, probably trying to ease the pressure herself. I ended up laughing as well, and we laughed there for nearly a minute before I helped her up, guiding her to the couch.
"I'm the one who's trying to treat you like a baby here, Snugglebug." Alice rolled her eyes as we sat down.
She lay down on the couch, and I joined beside her, placing my head gently on her belly. I could hear the audible beating of two hearts, even without a stethoscope. The beauty of conception!
"I don't remember asking you for that treatment." I tried to act stubbornly.
"Oh, so I should've left you to cry your eyes out on my floor? No, thank you. I will not allow this house to be filled with tears spilled over a man." Alice stated firmly, almost sounding serious if not for the chuckle that escaped her mouth after.
I smiled, snuggling up even more to her body.
We stayed silent again, Alice never stopping by occasionally brushing my hair with her fingers. I was glad. At least I wasn't alone in this.
"Thank you, Alice." I smiled wryly, my voice filled with pure gratitude. And I meant it. I was glad I had her, Brielle, and Gabe in my life.
Speaking of Brielle and Gabe, I wonder if I should tell them about this. Especially, Gabe, he'd already warned me from the beginning to be careful not to fall for Shawn.
J don't think I wanted to hear him saying, 'I told you so'. I could already picture the smug, but yet sorry look on his face.
"Oh, stop Snugglebug! It's merely the bare minimum. We're friends, are we not?" Alice patted me gently on the back as she spoke, almost rocking me like a baby.
I nodded my head in reply to her rhetorical question. Of course, we were friends. She was almost like a sister at this point.
We stayed silent for a while before Alice finally broke the silence.
"So, now what, Serenity? How about your work at Gadget Inc.'s site?"
Oh, I'd almost forgotten about work. Hehe, how could I even remember when it felt like my world was turning upside down?
"Shawn said I should stop overseeing the site. He'll ask my company to send someone else to take over while sending a good word to them on my behalf." I shrugged. That was actually for the best.
I already felt too pressured with the deadline, and after Justin Xane had destroyed the site, and my break up with Shawn, I wasn't in the right state of mind to ensure the site was completed on time.
"That bastard!" Alice suddenly blurted, clenching my hair in anger. "Isn't it bad enough that he's broken your heart? Now he wants you to stop working on a site you've been so passionate about? All because what, you almost gave some shady documents to his business rival?"
I could feel her anger, and I felt touched. However, I wished she'd stop taking out her anger on my innocent hair.
"Ouch! Alice, my hair." I tapped her hand lightly.
Alice withdrew her hands quickly, gasping in shock.
"Oh, sorry Snugglebug. I got a bit carried away there for a second." She sounded remorseful. The pregnancy hormones were probably messing with her emotions.
"A bit?" I rolled my eyes in mock annoyance. But Alice ignored that, going back to Shawn.
"But seriously though, I wouldn't mind giving Shawn a piece of my mind for you." Alice still sounded serious.
I sighed. The last thing I wanted was to involve Alice In any of this. Besides, it wasn't as bad as she saw it.
"It's fine Alice." I playfully pinched her nose lightly. "I'll just have to buckle up now and wait for my company to put me in charge of another site. There are lots of private and government firms in the country that'll want my expertise in working on their projects."
That was the truth. My reputation was known almost nationwide. I had a track record of always quickly completing any project I was assigned in charge of. Gadget's Inc.'s case was the first I'd ever experienced in my few years in this business.
"Oh well, if you say so Snugglebug." Alice shrugged, her anger disappearing almost instantly.
"Alice?" I called out meekly, feeling my chest tighten. "Could we, not talk about Shawn again? Ever? I want to forget him."
It pained my heart, but it was for the best. I wouldn't be able to concentrate on any project I put my mind on if I was repeatedly reminded of Shawn. I needed to move on.
"That's not a problem Snugglebug." Alice kissed my forehead. I smiled, feeling a little relieved now. I kissed her stomach, chuckling when I felt a kick from the baby.
"He's going to be a fighter, that's for sure." I teased, referring to the baby.
"Not while I'm here to raise him." Alice rejected my words almost instantly. We both laughed at the thought, talking a bit more about other stuff before retiring to bed for the night.
Tomorrow's problems would take care of themselves.
