SHAWN DONNELLY
~~
“Your office has been burglarized again, Mr. Donnelly.” Gina reported to him over the phone.Disappointment chewed at Shawn’s stomach. This meant only one thing; that Landers was the spy. Sunny’s smart plan involved him making up false information as he did. He didn't even tell Sunny what it was that he was going to say to Landers. He talked about the keys only in the presence of Landers too.
As anger simmered within him, so did concern. Serenity also said there was a disaster at the site. What disaster? His mind was in disarray but he’d trust Serenity to handle the issue with the site. For now, he had to go confirm if Landers was indeed the spy.
For some reason, this was making his heartache. Stepping out of the mansion, he found Landers waiting by his car, the usual respectful smile on his face. Now, Shawn knew that was a malicious one.
“Good morning, Mr. Donnelly.” He greeted as usual.
Shawn almost didn't reply but he didn't want to give the man a hint of what was coming. “Morning, Landers.” He stoically replied and settled into his car.
Shawn’s eyes peered into Landers as he settled in the driver seat, ready to drive. This was a man he’d placed his life on many times. The drive was suffocating. Lander's betrayal proved to be strong enough to break Shawn.
Yet, he couldn't afford to break down. When they reached the company, Shawn practically flung himself from the car and headed straight for his office. If he didn't see it himself, he’d never be able to believe that Landers was a spy.
He was almost by the elevator when he collided with Sinclair.
“Mr. Donnelly!” He beamed, hands flinging behind him.
Shawn had no strength to handle Sinclair’s taunts this morning but what Sinclair said next halted him.
“Those trailers," He drawled, his voice dripping with honeyed malice, "I eagerly await their… conversion."
WHAT?!
Shawn felt his entire joints weaken. The news slammed into him like a ferocious wave, leaving him reeling. First, it was Landers, and now, Gina?
Those two that he’d kept close for a very long time and trusted were the ones killing him from the inside?! He never lets anyone in, he never softens up to people, and the few ones he’d let his guard down with were vultures?
Calista — she must have cursed him. Calista definitely had cursed him. He was cursed. Everyone had been betraying him like he’d done Calista.
The sheer weight of the betrayals rendered him speechless, his legs rooted to the spot.
Sinclair took this as an invitation to gloat, chuckling, "Don't look so surprised, Mr. Donnelly. Nothing escapes these eyes and ears, not even your precious secrets. I think you should have known that by now.” He sauntered off immediately.
Shawn groaned, his eyes glaring into Sinclair as he majestically waltzed off, probably feeling like the only man in the world.
“This can't be happening.” He sighed and headed for his office, ignoring Sinclair’s ludicrousness.
When he got to the reception, the sound of the machines whirring was in the air and the stench of sawdust and fresh paint assaulted Shawn's senses as he stepped into the reception.
Dust swirled in the afternoon sunlight filtering through the windows, clinging to the remains of his office door. Workmen hammered and drilled through his door, mending it.
Shawn halted, both hands on his hips as he watched. He gazed at Gina from where he stood, wondering why she had to betray him. As if she sensed him, she looked up. “Good morning, Mr. Donnelly. I think it's best we involve the police at this point.” She suggested.
Look at her acting all innocent. Shawn secretly clenched his fists, forcing himself to keep at bay. The Lord help him, he longed to smash a hammer on Gina’s head.
“Gina.” He mused, nodding vigorously. “I’ll go inside now.” He said, not casting her a glance as he approached workers by his door.
“Sir, they are still fixing the door!” Gina called but Shawn didn't answer.
The workers noticed his arrival and ceased their weldering. “Good morning, sir!” They all chorused.
Shawn merely acknowledged them with his hands and went straight into his office. He entered his desk section and went for the safe where he kept the fake key.
He didn't have to look for long before he found the box opened widely. Still, trying to give Landers the benefit of the doubt, he went to it and gazed inside.
The key was gone. Landers was a spy. Gina too. His world had crumbled. Feeling sore all over, he collapsed on his chair and called Sunny first.
“Mr. Donnelly,” Sunny said at the other end of the call.
Shawn couldn't even exchange pleasantries with him. “The plan worked, Sunny.”
“Excellent.” Sunny sounded excited. “I knew that was the quickest way to catch them. So, who are they?”
Shawn wanted to tell him that nothing was amusing but he skipped it. “They are both spies, Sunny. Landers and Gina are both spies.”
The silence that prevailed afterward betrayed Sunny’s shock. “Oh, my God. I'm so sorry, Mr. Donnelly. This just justified what I said; nobody is to be trusted.”
Shawn buried his head in his hand, his head already banging. “Sunny, I don't know what to do. I do not know what to do.” He confessed.
“I do understand your frustration, Mr. Donnelly. But you are a businessman – such betrayals are inevitable. I'll come to see you right away.” Sunny tried to console him.
Nah. Sunny coming here was not a good idea. Sunny was the only one he’d trusted now. He couldn't afford Sinclair getting him too.
“I told you about not coming here. When I get home, you come then.” He said.
“Alright, sir. I'll wait for you at the mansion by evening.”
The call ended and Shawn was once again left with his thoughts. When he remembered Serenity and the disaster she mentioned, his unease aggravated. He needed to call her. Nothing must go wrong with the site.
Shawn called her line for over ten times but was redirected to the voice mail. “This is so unlike Serenity during working hours.” He muttered to himself as the whirling of the machine subsidized. “Why am I getting a bad feeling?” He breathed before calling into Gina.
At least, while she was still here, she’d commence her duty as his secretary until he got rid of her.
