Dysebel

The two maids arrived shortly after. Shawn didn't waste time in throwing the question at them as sternly as he could. “Who came into my study apart from you two?”

The two maids exchanged glances. That piqued Shawn’s annoyance the more. “Answer the damn question! Who did you give the keys to my study TO?!”

“Sir, I do not know if this is what you mean but Ms. Fairchild said you asked for her to come get some books in here. I gave the keys to her yesterday while you were away.” Selene answered.

If the girl had minced words, Shawn would have doubted the truthfulness of her words. “Serenity did what?!” He couldn't believe his ears.

He never spoke to Serenity about his study before. Where did the lie about the books come from then? Why would Serenity lie anyway?

His tone seemed to have shaken Selene as the poor girl quivered. “I — I thought… she said you wanted her to have the book as company since you were away and she was sick.” In a crying tone now, “I’m sorry, sir.” She pleaded.

“What did I tell you about the study keys? FUCKING NEVER GIVE THEM TO ANYONE!” He hollered.

He didn't know what to think right now. It felt awkward trying to picture Serenity as a liar. The documents. He needed to check if they were still there. He hated to think this but if Serenity had other motives for lying her way to his study, then he was done for.

“I'm sorry, Mr. Donnelly!” Selene fell on her knees, crying now.

Shawn sucked in a breath. “I know you're lying. Tell me you're lying. Serenity didn't come here, did she?”

“I'm so sorry, Mr. Donnelly, but she did.” Selene wailed, shoulders trembling and head lowered.

Oh, shit.

“GET OUT! GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!” He hollered at the maids, fuming.

On a whim, they both scurried out of the study.

Shawn began to pace up and down. His senses seemed to have eluded him. It sucked to think Serenity could be a betrayer. She was the one woman he had thought so highly of. She was the only one he’d allowed himself to be vulnerable around.

When he thought of everything he had told her about him, “Oh, this is fucked.” He groaned, pacing back and forth.

“Who is Serenity, Mr. Donnelly?” Sunny questioned.

Shawn let go of his pudding head. “The woman I told you about.”

“Those dysebels!” Sunny hissed. “Women are unnecessary devils.”

Right now, Shawn wanted to be alone. First, he could feel his eyes getting glossy. He wouldn't want Sunny to see him all weak and vulnerable like that. He’d trusted Serenity enough to let her in and this was what he got.

Damn, she was good. He never suspected her.

Secondly, nothing would ever make him trust anyone again. He wanted to check if the documents were safe where he kept them. He didn't want to trust Sunny enough to let him see them in case they were there.

“Can you wait outside the door for a while, Sunny?” He asked.

Sunny didn't probe. “Sure, Mr. Donnelly. I'll be right outside the door, waiting.”

Shawn headed to the shelf where he kept the disguised documents immediately Sunny stepped out. He didn't find it. He searched and searched for it even in unnecessary places but found nothing.

Panic kicked in. Anxiety, fear, and regret did too. His legs began to wobble. He had never felt this distressed before. His heart was aching too. He was convinced there was a wound in his heart.

Serenity was a mole. She penetrated him, asked him loads of questions, made him get comfortable with her, and stabbed him in the back. Why didn't he see that coming?

Because of pussy? Damn. His last name wasn't Samson, so why?

Two drops of fluid on his desk brought him back to his senses. Or maybe pushed him farther off of it. He was crying. Why was he crying?

It was his heart. It had been compressed so hard that he felt his lungs struggling for air. Shawn hadn't anticipated this emotional overflow. His hands trembled as he reached for a tissue, hastily wiping away the unexpected tears.

The weight of the recent events had finally taken its toll on him. The betrayal, the sabotage, and now, Serenity was one too. It was already enough to find that Gina and Landers were traitors. He had to deal with seeing Serenity as one too.

He should be more concerned about the end that was looming on him since the documents had been stolen but he was more pained that Serenity did it.

It took a while for him to steady himself and asked Sunny to come back in.

“What do you intend on doing now, Mr. Donnelly? I for one would suggest that you send the first two betrayers away and then, we set a trap for the Serenity girl.” Sunny suggested.

Shawn’s head continued to get lighter. “I don't even know where she is now. She left the site and she's not here. I don't know where she stays since she doesn't originally stay around here. Moreover, I doubt she would go hide where she stays since it’d be easy to catch her there.” He sniffed.

“Who do think she works for? Is it the same person as your driver and Secretary?” Sunny asked.

It’d definitely be Sinclair. Only Sinclair knew about the documents. The bastard really pulled a fast one on him. He managed to get everyone close to Shawn under his nose.

Shawn thought to himself how done for he was.

“I suggest you send the driver and secretary away to give them more time to meet with the mastermind. I'll have my men follow them so that we can have evidence against them.” Sunny began. “By the way, was something stolen in your study, Mr. Donnelly?”

Half of Sunny’s words were barely getting to Shawn. “Yes.” He absentmindedly replied.

“Whatever it is, we will get it back, Mr. Donnelly. Fret not. Just follow my instructions.” Sunny advised.

Shawn looked at him. “Send Landers and Gina away, right?”

“Yes.”

Shawn picked up his phone immediately but he was too shaky that the device fell. Sunny hurriedly retrieved it for him.

“Take it easy, Mr. Donnelly. I'm here. I won't let any harm come to you. As long as you listen to me, victory will be ours.” He handed the phone to Shawn.

Shawn could only nod. His heart seemed to be hurting more with every minute he thought of Serenity. “Hello, Landers. You are fired. Leave my premises now.”
