Mahima stared at the phone, its black surface reflecting the turmoil in her eyes. Akshita's words echoed in her mind, a cruel mantra. "Maybe he's ashamed of you," they'd hissed, planting a seed of doubt that threatened to bloom into a poisonous vine. Steeling her nerves, she dialed Jagjeet's number. It rang once, twice, then his voice, usually warm and welcoming, filled her ear.

"Hello?"

"Hey babe!!!" Jagjeet exclaimed ,his voice soft yet excited "I'll be there in 30 minutes" "can't wait to see you"

"Hmm" mahima simply replied with her mind clouded with Akshita's words

"Jagjeet," Mahima began, her voice small, the weight of her question threatening to choke her. "It's about meeting my friends." Mahima hesitated " I mean can introduce you to my friends"

"Mahima" he interrupted, a hint of impatience creeping into his tone, "you already told them ,that....
we are meeting". "You are such a duckhead" (why can't you understand)

"We'll talk about it when I get there. In thirty minutes." He said now tired

The call ended abruptly. Mahima gripped the phone tighter, her knuckles turning white as the minutes stretched into an agonizing eternity. Each tick of the clock hammered against her already fragile sense of security. The doubt gnawed at her, a relentless predator feeding on the insecurities Akshita's words had awakened. Finally, she couldn't take it anymore.

With a deep breath, she forced herself to dial his number again. Her heart pounded a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a drum solo of fear and trepidation.

"Why you don't wanna meet my friends" Mahima closed her eyes, tears stinging her eyelids. "Jagjeet," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion, "your comment about meeting my friends... it made me realize something."

"What?" he rasped, a tremor of fear creeping into his voice.

"Maybe you are ashamed of me," she choked out, the words a bitter truth that tasted like a betrayal.

"Thats not" jagjeet protests through the phone, "lets meet first and then talk"

"If you are not ashamed of me then why didn't you ever introduce me to any of your colleagues" "you never even announced our relationship to them".....
"Are you not serious about me"

"Or you just want to have fun?" Mahima blurted out anger clouding her mind

"Mahima don't....you know what!!!! there are women who are ready to be in my bed with the snap of a finger!!! And all these women are way prettier than you....." Jagjeet said things which he surely is gonna regret

"I never ever touched you, even after being in a relationship with you for three years"...."you still think i am a womanizer!!!!" He shouted his lungs out

"Jagjeet," she blurted out the moment he picked up, her voice laced with urgency. "Listen to me."

"Mahima, what is it now?" His voice was laced with a frustration that sent a fresh wave of hurt crashing over her.

"This whole meeting my friends thing," she took a shaky breath, the words catching in her throat. "Forget it." The words tasted like ash in her mouth, a bitter pill she had to swallow.
