The One that (Almost) Got Away

The next morning Y/n woke up with Doppo's hand touching hers. For some reason, she felt a wave of panic come over her and darted up before going straight to Kaya's room. The quick movement woke Doppo up and he followed Y/n to Kaya's room. Kaya's bed was empty and the house was eerily quiet. "KAYA!" Y/n yelled, not caring about being in an apartment. "Where are you baby girl," Y/n ripped doors open, hoping Kaya was in the house. "Come on baby, this isn't funny," Y/n's voice was breaking. Once she realized that Kaya was nowhere to be found, Y/n put her hand on her mouth and leaned on a wall to stop herself from crying. Doppo wrapped his arms around Y/n and kissed her cheek. "Come on, we'll find her," he spoke gently. 

Y/n got dressed and went back into Kaya's room. Taking a closer look, she realized that the window was cracked. "Doppo, get in here!" she yelled. His eyes widened when he saw the crack. "...but how? We would've heard something," he was just as confused as Y/n. "I don't know...but they were planning this, whoever did this," Y/n explained. "Let's go," Doppo grabbed onto Y/n's hand and took her to the parking garage. "Where are we going?" Y/n asked. "Armed Detective Agency, they can help," he explained calmly, but deep down he was just as worried as Y/n. 

When the two of them arrived, they were greeted by Yosano. "What's up with the faces?" she asked. "Kaya's gone," Doppo said. Yosano put her hand to her mouth. "Guys! Meeting now," she called out to her coworkers. "Tell us," Yosano nodded to Y/n. "Last night we all went to be like normal, but this morning Kaya was gone, I noticed that her window was cracked," she explained quickly. "Miss Y/n, can you give me a description of your house setup and the type of windows you have?" Dazai asked. "Yeah sure, it's a two bedroom apartment with one bathroom, the windows were built by the same company that made the complex," Y/n explained. "Alright, Ranpo what are you thinking?" Dazai asked his coworker. 

"This was obviously a planned attack, but I can't quite figure out who did this, can you ask around if you know what I mean?" Ranpo asked. "I'm on it," Dazai said. "How are you feeling?" Doppo asked Y/n. "Not great, what if something happened to her? This is all my fault," Y/n's voice was all shaky. "It's not your fault, we couldn't do anything, but we're gonna get her back, I promise," Doppo comforted Y/n. Tears ran down Y/n's cheeks and it reminded Doppo of when they were younger, she would cry a lot, but this time Y/n had a good reason to cry. "Why don't we go down to the cafe?" Doppo suggested. "I can't eat like this," Y/n denied. "You have to get something in your system," Doppo knew Y/n wouldn't eat like this, so he had to make her eat. 

The two of them took a seat at the cafe and Doppo poured sugar and creamer into Y/n's coffee. The waitress came back with some pastries for the two of them to eat. Y/n's eyes looked soulless. "Hey...is my Y/n still there?" Doppo asked with a small smile on his face. "Don't call me that," Y/n looked away from him. "Fine, do you need some space?" Doppo asked. "I don't know," Y/n replied quietly, almost in a whisper so she didn't start crying again. "We're going to find Kaya and she's gonna be safe," Doppo placed his hand on Y/n's cheek so he could look at her.

"Y/n, Kunikida, we have something to show you," Dazai barged into the cafe. "What is it?" Y/n pulled away from Doppo quickly. "Let's get back to the office," Doppo suggested. Y/n nodded and they went back upstairs. Y/n and Doppo took a seat on the couch and Dazai had showed them a screenshot of Kaya on surveillance in a building. "Where is this?" Y/n grabbed the photo to get a better look at her daughter. Dazai was silent for a few moments and looked over at Kyoka and Ranpo. "Dazai where is she?" Doppo asked this time, getting irritated. "She's in the Port Mafia's custody, we haven't contacted them yet, we wanted to let you guys know first," Kyoka spoke up. 

"Is Kaya gifted?" Ranpo asked. "Not that I know of, she hasn't shown any signs of being gifted," Y/n explained. "Y/n's gifted...isn't she?" Dazai asked. "Yes, I am," Y/n turned over to him. "I made a call to an old acquaintance, he keeps track of people who are gifted. Hypnotic Eyes was it? The gift that gives you control over others if you hold eye contact with them for a certain amount of time," Dazai explained to everyone. "What does that have to do with anything?" Y/n asked. "Both you and Kunikida are gifted, if Kaya has a gift I wouldn't be surprised," he explained. Y/n and Doppo looked at each other with fear in their eyes. 

If Kaya was taken by the Port Mafia, it meant they wanted to exploit her, but she hadn't awakened a gift yet. "Dazai...contact the Port Mafia," Kunikida ordered. Dazai got up from the couch and made the call in private. Y/n's hands got clammy and her heart started beating faster. She heard people talking around her, but it was all muffled. "Y/n snap out of it!" Doppo grabbed ahold of her shoulder. They held eye contact for a second, but Y/n broke away to protect him. "Calm down Y/n!" Doppo said. "What's happening?" Ranpo asked. "Her eyes are glowing purple, let's maybe give her some space," Atsushi suggested. 

Dazai then came back from the phone call. "I called Kōyō...she said the Port Mafia wouldn't let her go without a fight," he hesitated to speak. "Doppo...do something," Y/n spoke quietly. "We need time to plan what we are gonna do," he said. "Are you kidding me? Our daughter is being held at the Port Mafia base and you wanna waste more time to plan?" Y/n exploded with anger. "Y/n...I'm trying to.." Doppo trailed off. "I don't wanna hear any of your shit Doppo, I will go get our daughter back, if you're a good father you'd be helping me," Y/n walked out of the Armed Detective Agency. 

"We fucked up, didn't we?" Dazai said. "Shut up,"  Ranpo and Atsushi said in unison. The two of them looked at Kunikida who was disappointed, not in Y/n but in himself. He really let down both Y/n and Kaya by sitting around and not taking action.
