"Touya, Touya!" I giggled uncontrollably as I raced along the familiar sidewalk. To my left lay some small apartments, each one like a mini-house that stretched upward with its own gate and small front yard. They were all the same shade of navy, yet they seemed to have their own personalities. To my right lay Jiosen Centre, where we were headed. The barren cherry blossom trees swayed gently in the wind, a barrier from the cars on the road beside me.

Touya was an easy seven feet ahead, carrying the heavy water bottle I took along with me for drinking. It had seemed so heavy in my arms, yet he swung it around with ease. "Come and get it!" he teased, giving me a challenging grin. I caught up to him, thankful for the crosswalk light that had turned red the second he approached.

"Now," I heard Father call from behind us, his tone strict yet somehow gentle, in its own way. "Don't run off into the middle of the street." I looked back to see him casually walking towards us, Shoto a foot ahead of him. Shoto had seemed timid the entire day, but I couldn't place my finger on what he was nervous about. It was my seventh birthday, and Father finally decided to spend time with Shoto, Touya, and me. Seeing him out and about as anyone but Endeavour is a rare occurrence and I felt ecstatic he was spending his day off with us. I waved them over just as the light changed, my expression care-free and an attitude to match.

After crossing once more, we arrived at the park. At first, I was expecting Father to take us over to the playground, but I then realized that he had something else in mind. Since it was about ten in the morning, most people were off at work or whatever responsibilities adults had, and the four of us were there all alone. Father led us into the woods and I ran ahead, still chasing Touya for entertainment. He slowed down and sped up randomly, making the game more and more fun. I knew all of the twists and turns of the forest, so navigating to the practice arenas wasn't an issue. I finally managed to catch up to Touya as he stood in front of an already-prepped arena, not even out of breath. He and I waited for Father and Shoto, who fell behind while we were running.

I felt a shiver run up my spine from the cold, even though the sun was out and it hadn't snowed yet. November was still quite cold for a seven-year-old. Touya noticed, pulling his hand out and lighting it ablaze. He crouched down beside me as I pulled out my own hands and warmed them up. This was our relationship: Fool around and care for each other. I watched the blue flames in amazement as he made them dance on his hands. His quirk always impressed me, no matter how little the trick.

As soon as Father and Shoto started to approach, he pulled his hand back into his pocket. I didn't know why, but I was just happy to have been able to see his quirk in action. "Y/n," spoke Father in a commanding tone. I didn't think I'd ever hear him speak kindly since the day I was adopted. "Shoto, go on into the arena and start warming up," He gave me a spare glance, as if he was assessing me, then locked eyes with Touya. Something about the way they were staring at each other made me feel nervous, as if something terrible was about to happen. Touya leaned from one leg to another, daring to give a challenging glance as Father crossed his arms. "We need to talk,"

As I took my water bottle from Touya's warm hands, Shoto pulled me over. "Y/n, whatever you do, don't try to listen to their conversation," he warned. It didn't cross my mind to eavesdrop, but after what Shoto said, I was dead set on figuring out what was going on. As I (pretended) to warm up by aimlessly swishing my water around me, I caught little tidbits of the conversation two meters away.

"... to fight them today, it's for their own good. You..." I heard Father demand harshly. I may have not heard him speak kindly, but I had never heard him speak like this. It was as if Touya did something unforgivable.

"... their own good? For hell's sake they're children! I can't control my quirk and you expect me to..." Touya counters. His voice sounds desperate and angry, but as I snuck a quick glance at him, he seemed calm and controlled. What did he mean by "I can't control my quirk"? He's used his quirk hundreds of times around me and I'm not burned to a crisp.

"... then I'll do it for you. They-" Father started but then Touya cut in. I could hear the anger in Father's voice increase, and I start to feel scared for Touya. I've always known our father was not one to anger, but Touya always pushes on his limits.

"No! You'll hurt them worse than I would. You-" Before Touya could finish, I heard the sound of  a sizzling barbecue. I looked around to try and see who was cooking bacon in the park, but the sound stopped as quickly as it started and I couldn't smell the usual meaty scent of it. Instead, my nose caught something burnt, like plastic or overcooked steak. I looked back at Father and Touya, and Touya's hand clasped over his wrist. Seeing it smoke wasn't enough for me to connect the dots, but I did as soon as I saw the charred skin. I almost lost control of the water flowing around me in shock. It was then when I realized how violent of a person our father was.

I barely had time to question Shoto how he knew something like this was going to happen when Touya sauntered back over as if nothing had happened. "C'mon, Hydra." he grinned playfully, almost as if his arm wasn't burning underneath his hoodie. He thew down the black vest he wore as I undid my heavy coat, putting both of them off to the side. "We're up first."

I had never battled with Touya as he would always refuse to come along for training sessions. I knew his quirk well enough, but I didn't know his moves. I guessed this is how my future as a hero would be; knowing the enemy's quirk but not their attacks. As we set off, I tried to close the gap, mainly because I wanted to talk to Touya. It took me the whole round to figure out that getting close was the wrong strategy if I was actually trying to win. As soon as I was able to speak quietly, I do. "Why?" I asked desperately, still trying to dodge the fiery fists he tries to send my way. One of them made contact, sending me to the ground as he stood atop me. He then helped me up with his bad arm, pretending to get ready for another round. "Why did you let Father do that and why did you tell him you can't control your quirk? And how did Shoto know that something bad was going to happen?" I try to fit all of my questions in quickly, in hopes that he'd answer them all.

"Patience, Hydra," he responded. I wasn't used to him being so philosophical, since he was always the one begging for the answer straight. "I'll tell you another time. You're still to little to understand." He then sends another one of his attacks my way, this time scorching my hair just the tiniest bit.

"But Sho-" I started, almost crying in desperation for answers. How long has Father been like this and what have I done to spare his wrath? I manage to knock Touya down with a well-used whip of water to his feet, then helping him up. Our time was over.

"Don't let Father figure out you know." He then left me on the side of the arena, getting ready to fight Shoto. Father continues to watch, his expression almost distasteful as the blue-ish shield formed around Touya and Shoto. I sat down on the opposite side of the edge, unable to look at Father the same way. A little part in me wished I never learned his dark secret.

Tired and sweaty, I laid backwards on the grass, looking up at the November sky. I had no clue what Shoto and Touya were doing, but the ground underneath my head started to bounce up and down. Sleepy, I closed my eyes and...

Woke up on an old, rickety bus driving atop a gravel mountain.

A/n:
So I was planning on extending this chapter further, but then decided not to because it would have been like 3000 words and I didn't want to torture myself and all of you by writing any more. Anyway, buh bye!!!
