Annabeth's reaction to Percy going missing in HOO.
Annabeth gazed outside the window and sighed softly. She wiped at a tear rolling down her cheek and gazed outside again.
A knock on her door disrupted her thinking time.
"Annabeth!" Grover calls.
Annabeth takes a deep breath and musters enough energy to reply "what?"
"Chiron wants to see you."
"I don't want to!" She shouts breathlessly.
"I know you're sad but you haven't shown your face in a week. You've been camped up in Percy's cabin wearing his sweatshirt. That won't bring him back."
"I don't care. I'm tired and I'm sick of living." She says defeatedly.
"Chiron said that you would refuse. He also said that if you really wanted to get Percy back, you would leave his cabin and help us look for him." Grover yells through the door.
Annabeth lays down on Percy's bed and screams into his pillow. Why did people keep bugging her? She obviously didn't want to see anyone. She just wanted to sit in the dark and cry. The truth was she couldn't live without Percy. She loved him too much and if she went to search for him, she was afraid to find unwanted answers that would destroy her very being. She couldn't do it.
She flipped over and looked at the bulletin board by his bed. Pictures of her and Percy were a majority of the pictures, but there were also pictures of him and Sally, the camp getting ready for battle, and all the campers at Camp Half Blood. She stared at one picture in particular. A picture of her and Percy outside in the snow, looking happier than ever. That was the last time they spent together. When Annabeth woke up to find Percy gone, she went through two days of crying into Percy's pillow nonstop and on the third day she barricaded herself into Percy's cabin and hung up their last picture together to remember him.
"Annabeth- you there?" Grover called.
Annabeth did not answer but she walked silently to the door and opened it. She looked like a mess. She hadn't brushed her hair in a week, she looked underfed as she refused to eat, and she had dark circles under her eyes.
Grover gave out a soft gasp and pulled her into a hug. "I know you miss him. I do too. But doing nothing doesn't help him. He is still out there. I can feel it. Remember the bond I share with Percy? If he dies, I die."
Annabeth teared up. "He's alive."
"He's alive. And he is waiting for us to find him."
Annabeth smiled and shut the door on Grover. 15 minutes later she emerged with her hair brushed and in clothes other than her pajamas. She still was tired and really skinny, but she looked way better.
"I'm ready. I will find him. And whoever took him will pay."
