A/N - This chapter was inspired by the stunning new single Please Please Please by Sabrina Carpenter, which just felt so Billy-coded that I had to do something with it immediately. For this one, Reader is Nancy and Mike's sister, and Billy and Max have a pretty good/healthy relationship. I hope you all enjoy it.
You knew that Billy could be a little hard to get along with from time to time. He did everything in extremes. He would drink himself silly and get into arguments that turned into fistfights. He could be cuttingly mean when he wanted to be. And God, you definitely weren't the only person who had noticed. When you'd confessed to your sister that he'd asked you out, she'd been close to losing her mind; she'd practically imploded when you told her that you were actually going out with him.
And despite all of that, in spite of your better judgement, you'd allowed yourself to fall head over heels in love with him. After all, he'd been on his best behaviour whenever you were around. He was the perfect boyfriend, devoted, sweet, and gentle; it was hard to even imagine the other side of him that other people saw when he was being so good.
So, when Nancy and Jonathan had announced that they were getting married you had begged her for a plus one, even though you knew that she hated the idea of you bringing him with you. And when Nancy had relented and allowed him an invite, you were elated. Or at least, you had been until the day of the wedding, when you'd finally started thinking about Billy being around your family.
You were standing in front of the mirror, fully made up and ready to go, your hands smoothing down your dress over and over when Billy finally noticed the anxiety building in you.
"Nervous?" he hummed softly, walking up behind you, wrapping his arm around your middle and pressing a quick kiss to the side of your head. "You look so beautiful," he breathed out, his eyes meeting yours in the mirror.
A small smile pulled at your lips at his comment. See, this was so easy. This side of Billy was perfect, and if he could be like this all the time you would have been on cloud nine. But still, there was this nagging feeling in your stomach that told you that today wouldn't go as smoothly as all that.
Your smile faltered slightly, your eyes dropping from his in the reflection, focusing on your feet. "Please don't do anything stupid today," you breathed softly, feeling the hand that had been mindlessly caressing your hip still completely.
"What's that supposed to mean?" he murmured, and if you'd been able to lift your eyes to his you would've seen a whole heap of pain settling there.
"It's just-" your words trailed off and you untangled yourself from him, turning to face him. "Nancy knew you at school and she's got this warped view of you already and I don't want you to do something without thinking and prove her right when I've spent the last year trying to make her see how incredible you are."
Billy hesitated for a moment, his tongue running over his bottom lip as he looked away from you. "I didn't realise your family didn't like me-"
"That's not what I said," you interrupted quickly, catching his hand in yours and squeezing until he looked down at you. "Baby, they do like you, it's just-"
"Nancy doesn't think I'm good enough for you," he supplied gently, looking so damn sad that it made your heart break for him.
"She's finding it hard to believe that you're not the same guy you were in high school," you corrected quietly. "But she'll come around, alright? I just need you to prove me right and be the incredible man I know you are," you pressed, shifting forward to wrap your arms around his waist.
"I'll be on best behaviour," he hummed, leaning down to press a quick kiss to your lips. "Promise I won't embarrass you," he added softly.
A soft snort of laughter slipped out of you at his comment. "I think I'm going to be the embarrassing one," you teased. "Going to be sobbing the second I see my baby sister walking down the aisle in a wedding dress," you pressed, watching as his smile grew.
He pulled back slightly, reaching into the inside pocket of his suit jacket to pull out a packet of Kleenex. "Already prepared," he chuckled, before tucking them back into place.
*Time Skip*
You'd been smiling to yourself as you stood at the bar watching Billy move around the dancefloor with your cousin's daughter standing on his feet, giggling away as he swayed her to the music.
"I was wrong about him," a voice hummed beside you, causing you to startle slightly, turning to find Nancy at your side, holding out a drink for you. "I'm sorry for giving you such a hard time," she pressed on, offering you a small smile.
"Everyone makes mistakes when they're teenagers," you started, giving a small shrug. "But he's grown up now; he's a good man."
She nodded slightly, her eyes drawn back to where he was dancing. "And he makes you happy?"
"I've never been happier," you confessed quietly. "I love him," you added softly.
"Then he gets my stamp of approval," Nancy hummed. "Not that he ever needed it," she added with a soft snort. "You were always going to do what you wanted, whether I liked it or not."
You shrugged slightly. "I know I have good judgement, even if you don't always agree with me," you teased.
The two of you were still grinning at the bar when Billy had finally made his excuses, leaving his tiny dance partner to come and find you.
"Ladies," he hummed, his hand immediately falling to its usual spot on your hip before hesitating and pulling back.
"I think I owe you an apology," Nancy started, only for Billy to wave his hand dismissively.
He shook his head. "Nothing to apologise for," he murmured. "If Max had dated a guy that was as big of an asshole as I was in High School, I would've been a hell of a lot meaner than you have been," he added.
"Yeah, well I'm sorry anyway," she pressed. "And I'm glad you were there to stop Y/N from turning into a tear-stained mess during the ceremony," she teased, causing you to snort with laughter.
Finally, you caught Billy's hand, leading it back to its regular resting place on your hip and offering him a small smile.
"I'm hoping she'll be ready to do the same for me when Max and Lucas tie the knot next year," he chuckled, his grip on your settling, his entire body relaxing. "I'll be a blubbering mess seeing her walk down the aisle in a white dress."
You snorted with laughter as you tucked yourself into his side. "I'll start stocking up on the Kleenexes now," you teased, grinning when he playfully rolled his eyes at you.
