Chapter 22

M A R I A N O

What he said threw me out of the loop. My mind was a mess, my thoughts in a mix, and I didn't realize that I was already inside a helicopter, if not for the small prick near my wrist. "Sorry. I need to get you on IV. You are malnourished and you need all the energy because in just three months, major events happened."

"The plan... there was a plan. I would only be gone for a week and..." Hal, Zee, Jin and I discussed an intricate plan where I would withdraw my shares from the companies of the clan if they tried to mess up with me and Arden. I am one of the major investors in their companies and I was the one responsible for making it big. They got investments through my connections. The Il Volo name became huge because I worked hard for it.

Arden knew about the plan, too. I learned my lesson. My baby forgave me one and I had no plans on taking his kindness for granted.

"Arden, baby, you know why I can't take you with me." We were in the suite and we will remain here until I rid the elders of their power and influence.

He lifted his face and his glassy, hazel eyes filled with emotion struck the oxygen out of my lungs. "I know, but... what if you get hurt? I don't know what I will do if..." My heart broke when he covered his face with his hands as he sobbed softly.

I sat beside him and inhaled deeply. Seeing Arden like this is not good for my heart. I don't like seeing him in pain. "Baby, I just want you and our little bean safe and away from harm. Here at HQ, Jin, Hal and Zee can protect you. If you come with me, there's a possibility that they will take you away from me."

As much as I downplay the capability of the elders, they have already cemented their place in the underworld. They also have their own connections and I will not risk Arden and our baby because the elders are not someone you can negotiate with. They are small-minded group of individuals who only cares about power, wealth and connections. I will not bring Arden to a lion's den.

I stroked his hair and dropped tiny kisses on his temples until his sobs morphed into sniffles. He turned to me, eyes still wet from tears, his teeth trapping his bottom lips to stifle his sobs. I leaned in to kiss his tears away, and after doing that for a few times, he finally calmed down. My sweet, beautiful baby.

"I'm going to miss you. Baby bean too," he added with a sniff and crawled to my lap, nuzzling on the crook of my neck. I held him tight and buried my face on his hair, inhaling the sweet scent of his hair product.

"I will miss you more, Arden. While I'm gone, please take care of yourself too, okay? Whatever happens, I want you to put your trust in me. Believe in my love for you. There's no one else I'd rather love than you, baby," I whispered and rubbed his back.

He leaned back and cupped my face, then released a shaky smile. "I love you too, silly. Just come back as fast as you can, okay? If not, I will tell baby bean that his father abandoned us," he joked, making me smile.

I'm going to miss him so bad. I want to just whisk him away to some other country where the elders will not reach us, but that's just running away from the problem. We will always be in constant fear that the elders are out for Arden. We will not have peace. Thus, despite the need to snuggle with Arden and enjoy his warmth and company, I need to confront the elders and ask them, in a very nice way, to stop meddling with my life.

"I'll come back, Arden. You are my home." I pulled him for a feather-light kiss, our lips just pressing against each other, until Arden opened his mouth to accept my intrusion. Both of us sighed in contentment upon feeling that familiar taste of satisfaction as we let our tongue dance in that ancient rhythm. When Arden moaned sweetly, a fire was ignited in my groin, urging me to deepen the kiss, reveling in Arden's addicting taste.
