...SEPTEMBER...
Renee's POV :
*With trembling hands, I grasped the doorknob and swung the door open. And as it opened wider I stood there, frozen in place, my jaw dropping in sheer shock.*
Time seemed to stand still as I took in the sight before me. My heart sank, a heavy weight pressing against my chest, and I felt as if my brain had just exploded into a million pieces.
There she was, standing in the doorway, her face streaked with tears that shimmered in the dim light. Her eyes, usually so full of confidence and determination, were now wide with vulnerability and uncertainty, staring directly into mine. My heart feels so tight right now I think she might have pierced a hole in it with her gaze.
I wanted to reach out, to bridge the gap between us and hold her, to wipe away the tears and tell her everything would be alright. But I couldn't move. My feet were rooted to the spot, my hands clutching the door frame as if it were the only thing keeping me from collapsing under the weight of my own emotions.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she spoke. Her voice was barely more than a whisper.
"I can't leave" she was crying, her voice was trembling.
My heart ached for her, for us, and for the impossible choice she had to make. I wanted to say something, to offer comfort, but the words wouldn't come. Instead, I took a hesitant step forward, closing the distance between us. I reached out, my fingers brushing against her cheek, catching a tear before it fell. She leaned into my touch, her eyes closing for a brief moment
"But your flight, your job..."
"I know," she replied, her voice breaking. "I know it's everything I've been working towards, everything I've dreamed of. But sitting in that taxi, driving away from you... I realized something."
"What did you realize?" I asked, my voice barely more than a whisper, each word heavy with the fear and hope warring inside me.
"I realized that none of it means anything without you," she said, her voice cracking with emotion. "I can't do it, not if it means leaving you behind."
I closed the distance between us, Max's suitcase dropping to the floor. her arms enveloped me in a tight hug, her warmth a stark contrast to the cold outside. I clung to her, afraid she might leave again. Still not able to talk much.
"Renee, I— I'm so sorry," she whispered against my hair, her voice thick with emotion. "I never should have left you. I never should have even thought about it."
"No, you're not doing that," I interrupted, pulling back to look her in the eyes. My voice was firm but gentle. "You're not apologizing for wanting to follow your dream. You deserve to chase what you've worked so hard for."
She shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks, her eyes filled with a mixture of confusion and realization. "The thing is ... I don't think it's my dream anymore"
"Don't say that just to make me feel better, you don't have to give up your career for me " I asked, my voice barely more than a whisper, afraid to break the fragile silence that surrounded us.
