... January 29th... Renee is in Denver – Week one of the tour

Max's POV

Yesterday, Renee had a day off, she traveled from Austin to Denver. We called each other and stayed on the phone for hours while I was at work. It wasn't always about talking—sometimes, we just enjoyed the comforting silence. She'd scroll through TikTok, and I'd focus on work.

But today was different. I have the first open visit for the school and I have no time for our usual morning call. I woke up early, slipped out of bed and went for a run at 6:30am, got home at 7:15am, took a shower and grabbed a quick breakfast before heading out the door by 8.

As I left the house, I shot a little text to Renee to tell her I'll be calling her tonight. I already told her yesterday that I couldn't call this morning but I would like to send a good morning anyway.

Max 🖤 8:02 AM

'Good morning, pretty girl ! I'm heading to the school for the visits, very excited ! I'll call you tonight, love u <3'

I arrived at the school, just a little late. Willow and Hakim were waiting for me in the parking lot hand in hand. The open visits are set to start at 10 a.m, but we need to check the site before everyone arrives. This is the first time we're showing the school to outsiders, and I want everything to be perfect.

"Good morning love birds" I called out cheerfully as I stepped out of my car.

"Woaa Max, look at you, almost in time" Willow shot back with a wide grin.

Hakim chuckled and gave me a quick hug.

We spent the next hour walking through the space, making sure everything was ready for the visitors. Settling on what was important to say to the visitors, checking if everything was in place and what needed to be redone before the first school day of school.

But by ten, the first groups arrived. The visitors were mostly parents and future students for the school but also professors who were eager to discover their future place of work.

During one of the tours, a reporter from a local paper showed up. I wasn't planning on doing any press, but Willow and Hakim practically shoved me in their direction.

Their excuse was that I was "the one who talked during the award reception" and "the face of the project"—a bit of bullshit, if you ask me, but I went along with it.

I gave a private tour of the building to the reporter, a middle aged woman with short black hair and a very surprising choice of color for her button down shirt.

"Thank you Maxine for this tour. I'm really excited to see how everything is going to work once it's functional. But I do have one more question. You seem to be really passionate about this school, is there a reason why ?"

I paused, glancing around the nearly completed school

"Well, you know, it's—" I began, searching for the right words. "It's easy to be passionate about something you believe in, and this school is something I'm incredibly proud of. So yeah, there is a reason. It's about giving kids a place where they can feel safe, inspired, and ready to learn in the best environment possible. And that's something worth being passionate about."
