THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL WAS ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO DARIA, especially when she hadn't been in school for four years. Given the multiple trips her and her father went on, Michele thought it would be better if his daughter just had online classes.

That day she wore a new outfit she bought on one of the shopping trips her mother brought her on. Daria was styling her hair when her father came into her room, face pale and tired.

"Hey, pensavo stessi ancora dormendo, sono venuto a svegliarti. Adesso vado a dormire, have a good day at school" the man kissed her on the head before turning and walking out of the room. Her father finally found a job in a hospital nearby, and sleepless nights became a routine for him. (I thought you were still asleep, I came to wake you up. Now I'm going to sleep,)

"Thanks" Daria smiled at his back. The girl then finished her hair, went to the kitchen and prepared both her breakfast and her lunch. She didn't want to eat the school's food, not knowing the quality, so she took the leftovers from yesterday's dinner, some ragù pasta, and put it in the microwave. While she waited for her lunch she poured the warm water in her cup, putting a tea bag and sugar in it.

While she was having breakfast, the girl put her notebooks in her backpack, while her face was stuck on the dumb cartoon that was playing on TV. She wasn't late, but she decided to go pay a visit to her mother before school. She was also bringing Lisa to school today and hopefully all the following days.

She opened the front door, her phone and keys in one hand the other shutting the door and locking it. She walked to her mother's house after putting her backpack in the car.

"Hey mamà" Daria smiled at her mother. Her mother hugged her suddenly and began kissing her face.

"Ay, I can't believe my little girl is going to the 12th grade! You're going to graduate this year!" the woman exclaimed, tears brimming in her eyes at the thought. She was immensely proud of her daughter's accomplishments.

"I know, that's why I'm gonna work extra hard this year, and get my diploma." Daria promised her mother, hugging her back and kissing her cheek.

"You grew up so fast, you used to eat my hair and look at me with those big eyes, the same eyes as Manny" Gloria sighed at the precious memories she had of her children. The mother-daughter duo let go of each other and move to the kitchen where Gloria finishes putting Manny's things in his lunch bag. "And I can't believe my little boy is going into the fifth grade, he used to hold my finger with his little hand and smile at me with his cute mouth" she sighed. "Ay mi niño pequeño, Jay." (my little boy)

Jay kissed Gloria's shoulder "Yep, they grow up" Daria smiled at him.

"Hey Jay" the teen greeted.

"Hey Ria," with time the old man and his step-daughter began having a better relationship, Daria understanding that he was way better than Javier. "Come on Manny, let's get going!" he yelled for the boy. Daria looked at the time before getting up to go.

As she went for the door, Manny came down the stairs wearing a poncho. "How is my hair?" asked the younger boy. Daria looked at her brother, snickering, before deciding to stay just a little longer to watch how this would turn out.

"Hold on, what are you wearing there?" Jay frowned. "It looks like an old Christmas tree skirt."

"What's a Christmas tree skirt?" Daria asked, perplexed.

"It's a traditional Colombian poncho." Manny spoke over his sister, making her question go unanswered. "I want my new classmates to know I'm proud of my heritage"

"Iiih, I think you look very handsome!" exclaimed Gloria as she gave her son his lunch bag. "Lindo!" She then kissed his forehead affectionately. (cute)
