Contrary to the title, slightly, I believe that everyone is both and this is why (always wanted to use that).
Alpha's in this case are people who can take charge and can speak on behalf of other people, Beta's are the opposite, sorta, they follow the lead and are part of the group but not a big aspect vocally.
Introverts tend to stay Beta's due to the comfort of no pressure placed upon them, but sometimes we are pushed to be Alpha's. As a student this can happen in a classroom environment where your teacher makes you the assistant who voices the concerns of the class forcing you to ask what concerns this class has with the learning environment (this is an ideal classroom style if you ask me) but you can also be pushed in public situations, such as going shopping with your family. (Story time) during this slight break from writing I went shopping a few times, one of those times being for fathers day. Me, being broke and cheap, was sent to make sure my little brother didn't spend too much money on a pair of sneakers for himself while my older brother went job hunting. When we were paying for the sneakers my little brother became a Beta all of a sudden and I was put in charge of the situation. My brother, being the idiot that he was, turned out to be stupider than I thought and forgot everything you have to say about where you live when you buy anything with a card, he just stopped talking and looked at me as if I knew everything, luckily I did and I pulled him out of the hole he dug for himself.
However during a completely different shopping experience I was told to get a straw for my cousin and completely freaked out in the middle of the mall. Not even denying it I'm pretty sure everyone looked at me like an idiot and my cousin, who I was with, walked over and quickly asked for a straw and walked away with me. She then said,"Sometimes you're brave other times I'm so sure you're just going to turn into a turtle and hide under a table."
That's what got me thinking of this subject.
One day I'm perfectly fine in front of a store of strangers and the next I can't ask for a straw...
I thought about this instead of sleeping one night and, although there was no control group, it was like an experiment for me.
As introverts we're seen more as Beta's but we can be amazing Alpha's as well. Many leaders in the world, such as Abraham Lincoln, were introverts who still lead their country even though they would be considered as quiet or reserved.
We're not just people who can be ordered around, we can take charge when the power is in our hands, and it will suprise people. They woun't expect for us to be able to lead groups sucessfully but we'll show them exactly what we can do.
Not only are we Beta's, we are Alpha's as well.
Not only are we followers, we are leaders as well.
