WATER SPLASHED ONTO Olivia's shoes as she ran over a puddle. "Now what the hell is going on out there?" Newt referred to all the noises coming from outside the glade as everyone watched the three that just exited the maze slow down to a walk. "The hell you done now, Thomas?" Gally immediately blamed him. "We found something," Thomas ignored his comment and looked at Newt, who was walking beside Olivia. "A new passage, we think it could be a way out.""Really?" Newt's voice was low. "Yeah. It's true. We opened a door, something I've never seen before." Minho spoke as everyone walked behind them. "I think it must be where the Grievers go during the day."
"Wait. Woah, woah, woah. Are you saying you found the Grievers home? And you want us to go in?" Chuck pushed his way between Thomas and Olivia. "Their way in could be our way out, Chuck." Thomas looked back and forth between the girl and young boy.
"Yeah, or there could be a dozen Grievers on the other side. Truth is, Thomas doesn't know what he's done, as usual." Gally yelled as Olivia turned around, "Stop blaming him for everything." Suddenly, Thomas stopped walking and spun around to face him as well. "Yeah? Well at least I did something, Gally. I mean, what have you done? Huh? Aside from hide behind these walls all the time." Thomas fought back, Olivia stepped over to be next to him. "Let me tell you something, Greenie. You've been here three days. Alright, I've been here three years—"
"Yeah. You've been here three years and you're still here, Gally!" Thomas cut him off. "Alright? So what does that tell you? Maybe you should start doing things a little differently." Olivia had to bite back a smile. She turned around when she heard Teresa's voice trying to get everyone's attention. "Maybe you should be in charge, huh?" Gally shook his head while Thomas tilted his. "Guys!" Olivia yelled over the two boys arguing and gestured to Teresa. "It's Alby. He's awake." She sighed and smiled at Olivia to say a silent thank you. Olivia turned to Newt before running towards where Alby was.
"Has he said anything?" Minho asked Teresa as everyone followed her into the hut. "No." She stood off to the side so everyone could see him. "Alby?" Olivia knelt down in front of him while Newt sat beside him on the bed. "Alby, you alright?" She carefully placed her hand on his knee. He just stared forward with tears in his eyes while hugging a pillow. Olivia looked over at Thomas with a scared expression, Alby was like her big brother.
The second Thomas saw her eyes, he hurriedly crouched down next to her and put a hand on her back before looking up at the older boy. "Hey, Alby." He tried to get his attention. "Alby, we might've just found a way out of the maze. Do you hear me? We could be getting out of here." He tried to make conversation. Alby slowly began to shake his head, making Olivia relieved to know that he could hear them. "We can't." He whispered so lowly that it was hard to make out what he said. "Can't leave." He finished his sentence a bit louder. "They won't let us."
Olivia and Thomas looked at each other confused. "What are you talking about?" The boy asked. "I remember." Alby admitted, making everyone turn their heads and look at each other. "What do you remember?" Thomas swallowed while everyone stayed silent, watching Alby's face. "You two." He turned his head and looked at Thomas and Olivia. The girls face dropped when his words registered in her brain. "You two were always their favourite. Always." The two glanced at each other before looking back at Alby, a thousand questions running through both their heads.
Yelling was heard from outside, making them all turn towards the door. Olivia and Thomas were frozen, stuck looking in Alby's eyes. "Why did you do this? Why did you come here?" He questioned the two. Olivia watched with wide eyes as Thomas stood up, not breaking eye contact with Alby until he was out the door. Olivia stood up when Alby put his hands over his ears and started to cry, she breathed in as she followed after Thomas to see what all the commotion was about. Eventually everyone had left Alby alone and walked out of the hut confused.
Olivia caught up to Thomas, who was asking someone what was happening as she watched everyone frantically run around with lanterns. "The doors, they aren't closing." The guy informed before running off. Thomas began to run after everyone, everybody else following. Gally stayed behind for a few seconds and watched everybody freak out.
Everyone huddled around the entrance, some holding their lanterns and someone looking up at the doors. Everyone flinched when a loud bang was heard from behind them. They all turned around and saw another door beginning to open. Olivia had been stuck in an emotionless trance since talking to Alby, her mind was so crowded but so empty at the same time.
They all looked confused before flinching again, the same noise coming from the right. Another door opened. The exact same thing happening with the left side too. Everyone looked around scared and confused, nobody had seen this before.
Thomas turned to the youngest boy and put a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, Chuck. I want you to go to the council hall, okay? Start barricading the doors." He explained while the boy nodded. "Winston, go with him." Newt pushed the two boys in the direction of the hall. "Get the others, tell 'em to go to the forest and hide. Go, now!" Gally ordered another boy.
Olivia watched as everyone panicked while in a trance like state. Teresa grabbed her hand and squeezed it, reminding her to be aware. "Minho, I want you to grab every weapon you can find. I'll meet you at the council hall." Thomas pat his chest before turning to the two girls. "Hey, we're gonna go and get Alby, okay?" Thomas put his hand on Olivia's shoulder. The girls nodded and began to walk with the boy but quickly froze again when a bunch of boys came running out of the forest screaming.
A roar echoed through the maze behind them, causing them to turn around. Olivia gasped when she saw a Griever come around the corner. Teresa had let go of her hand and stepped back. "Alright. Everybody hide!" Thomas yelled as everyone began to run. Olivia stood frozen, watching the Griever. "Olivia, come on." Thomas put his hands on her shoulders and ran with her towards the gardens.
They ran through an immature cornfield as they tried to hide. "Get down!" Someone yelled, causing everyone to crouch down. Thomas ensured that Olivia was an arm's length away from him just incase he needed to help or protect her.
They all looked at each other, listening to the roar's of the Grievers and the screams of their friends. Thomas kept his pointer finger pressed against his lips to remind everyone to keep quiet. They flinched when a roar was extremely close. Suddenly, one of the boys was being picked up by the Grievers tail, making everyone rush towards him to try and pry his body from its grip. But by the time any of them could get close to him, he was flung through the air with a scream. His screams only got more frequent as the seconds went by.
Olivia choked back tears as she stared at the same spot of where he was just sitting. Thomas pulled her up and began to run again, forcing her feet to move in sync with his. "Go! Get to the village!" Thomas yelled as Olivia's brain finally let her process what was happening, snapping her back into reality. She blinked as she ran, looking over towards the middle of the Glade, seeing Gally rush people into the box.
She turned back in front of her to see Alby with a few of the other runners. "Alby! Are you okay?" Olivia scanned his body for any injuries. "What's going on?" He asked nobody in particular. "They're here." Thomas gulped. "The Grievers?" One of the boys who was holding up Alby asked. Thomas and Olivia nodded before looking at each other.
