TAPPING WAS THE only thing Thomas could hear. He was sat at a table with many other boys and girls, all looking like they had been brainwashed as they worked. Thomas looked around at everyone's faces, stopping when he looked directly across from him. Olivia stared at her keyboard, but didn't type anything. Her fingers seemed to be stuck in place. She had brown hair and looked a lot younger, but Thomas could still recognise her. He looked down at his keyboard and began to type, it was as if his fingers just knew what to do when his brain had no idea.
He jumped when a hand touched his shoulder, but he didn't look up to see who it was. "Excellent, Thomas. Come with me." A lady's voice whispered in his ear. As he stood up, Olivia looked up at him as if she knew something that he didn't, making his face become visibly confused. He let the lady walk him over to the other side of the room to a door. The door opened into a smaller room with a large computer screen on one of the walls, the rest of the room full of clutter, like it had been used for storage.
Thomas looked around before the lady practically forced his body to face her. "Wicked is good." Was the only thing she said, making Thomas look into her eyes and furrow his eyebrows. Neither of them spoke again after that.
The lady had eventually opened the door and walked away. Thomas slowly made his way out of the room and started to go back to his spot at the table. When he walked past Olivia, she suddenly stood up and grabbed his arm, quickly pulling him through the door and into another part of the building. He let her pull him along.
Once they were in a room that was illuminated by red and blue lights, Olivia cornered him. "Thomas. They're not who they say they are, okay? They're gonna figure out that I know sooner or later and they're going to kill me. I need you to promise me that you won't let them get in your head." She talked lowly, scared of someone hearing. "What? Know what?" He tilted his head. "If you know, they'll kill you too." She let out a shaky breath. "Promise me you won't let them take you too."
Thomas was extremely confused, but he could tell how much it meant to the girl. "I promise." He nodded his head as she stuck out her pinky. They linked their pinky fingers together and looked in each others eyes.
Before they could say or do anything else, two security guards came rushing through the doors, making them flinch. Thomas looked over at them while Olivia quickly took a step closer to him. She grabbed his jaw to make his face turn towards her. She pressed her lips against his. "I love you." She broke the kiss and looked up at him as a guard grabbed her by the waist and began to pull her away. Thomas tried to reach for her but the other guard stopped him.
He watched as she got dragged away. She was trying to push the guard off of her but she knew deep down that it was no use. Just before she was taken out of the room she looked at Thomas, he could tell that she was holding back tears as she tried to smile at him. He looked in the direction of the door for a few seconds before remembering there was a guard still in front of him. "Where is she going?" He got closer to him. When he didn't answer, Thomas pushed him back and repeated himself a lot louder.
The guard didn't speak, instead he took Thomas's hands and put them behind his back, walking him out of the room with struggle as the boy fought against him. Eventually the Guard led him to a small office, where the lady from earlier was going through papers. "This one was with Olivia." Was the only thing the guard said before letting go of Thomas's hands and walking out.
"Where is she?" He immediately stepped closer to the desk. "What did she tell you, Thomas?" She looked up at him. He glanced down at her papers for a split second and saw Olivia's photo on one of them, along with a name tag that was sitting on her desk, reading 'Ava Paige'. "She didn't tell me anything." He clenched his jaw. "Where did you take her?"
"Do you really want to know?" Ava asked him in a tone that almost scared him. He nodded his head, causing her to stand up and sigh. "Come on." She walked out of the room. Thomas followed closely behind her, walking past a few guards and doctors on the way. Ava then stopped at a door and turned around. "I need you to understand that this was for the best." She said seriously before opening the door.
The room was empty and dark, the only thing in it that you could really see was bright squares. Thomas figured out pretty quickly that there was a water tank on the other side of the wall that they had covered with paint, only leaving a few small glass windows to see what was in there.
His face glowed when he got closer to one of the windows, he couldn't see anything. He turned back to Ava to ask what he was meant to be seeing but heard a loud splash, making him look back. His face dropped when he saw Olivia's limp body slowly sinking. He hit the glass and yelled her name, trying to get her to wake up. He watched the air slowly get blown out of her nose, her body accepting its fate.
Thomas continued to hit and yell but when he realised it wasn't doing anything, he turned to Ava. "What is wrong with you?" He screamed in her face. He turned back to the glass and saw people pulling her now colourless body out of the water. A few tears made their way down his cheeks as he looked between Ava and the window. "What did you do?" His voice broke as he yelled. Ava just stared at him, not a single emotion evident on her face or in her eyes.
The guard from earlier came in to the room and started to pull Thomas away again. He tried to fight back but his body was tired, sadness slowly taking it over. The guard led him to a small room with a uncomfortable, thin mattress in the corner, a sink and toilet on the opposite side and a thick metal door with a little flap in the bottom half of it, supposedly for food. The guard threw Thomas in there and quickly shut the door. "What is wrong with you guys? I'm gonna kill you!" He banged his fists against the door.
After a few minutes of screaming and yelling, he leant against the wall and slid his back down. He started to sob, allowing his emotions to take over. He stayed like that for a good hour. He had stopped crying after twenty or so minutes and became emotionally numb. He stared at the floor while holding his head in his hands, his thoughts so loud that his head began to hurt.
More short memories of her started to show up in his mind from time to time, some of her laughing, singing and laying on his chest while tracing her finger over the fabric of his shirt. She seemed genuinely happy in those memories.
Thomas's subconscious mind eventually put together that they had dated.
