Two days passed, and Evangeline hadn't heard a word from Damien. Despite knowing she was still under his security, every message she sent him went unanswered, leaving her in a state of confusion and distress.
Rhea had called to relay a message from Kai, who said Damien was extremely busy with work, particularly with a Mexico client.
But to Evie, this explanation made no sense. She knew Damien better than that. He would have called, would have found a way to let her know what was going on.
The silence was deafening, and the hurt of being stood up for their date lingered.
Seeking some distraction, she walked to the kitchen, hoping to find some comfort in the familiar surroundings. As she approached, she overheard two chefs talking in hushed tones.
"Did you hear? They finally got her to talk," one chef said, his voice a mixture of relief and concern. "The lady admitted it was her plan all along, the attack on the queen. No one else was involved."
The other chef sighed, shaking her head. "Thank goodness nothing happened to the queen. It's terrifying to think how close it was."
Evie's heart skipped a beat, and she felt a cold shiver run down her spine.
The attack on the queen?
Her mind raced with questions and fear. When the chefs noticed her standing there, their eyes widened in shock, clearly startled by her presence.
"Princess Evangeline!" one of them exclaimed, fumbling with the dish he was holding.
She stood there, as if she had seen a ghost, her mind reeling from the unexpected revelation.
"What... what are you talking about?"she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper.
Before she could get answers from the chefs, Evie rushed out of the kitchen, her heart pounding. She made her way to her father's chamber, her thoughts racing. A meeting was in progress with several ministers, but she didn't care. She needed answers now.
Bursting through the door with a loud thud, she drew the attention of everyone in the room. The ministers turned to her, surprised and curious. The king, seated at the head of the table, immediately realized something was amiss. He saw the urgency and distress in his daughter's eyes.
The king dismissed the meeting, rising from his seat. The ministers exchanged puzzled glances but quickly gathered their documents and filed out of the room, leaving the king and Evie alone.
He walked over to her, his expression a mix of concern and confusion. He gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "Evie, what's wrong?"
"How could you, Daddy?" she asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of hurt and betrayal.
