Addy
It's two in the morning and my phone blares, waking me up to an empty bed. I can already hear the list of excuses Lawrence is going to give for not being home yet, but the simple truth is that he wants more responsibility from Sam, so he plans on bending over backwards to please her. I really don't care about what caused it, he can't leave me alone with a newborn like this every night.
As soon as I pick up the phone, an uneasy feeling begins stirring in my stomach. His voice is panicked, not even giving me the time for a hello.
"Addy, where are you? Have you heard from Sam?"
Suddenly sitting up straight, I reach for my nightgown. "Not since yesterday, what's wrong?"
A bit of shuffling can be heard on the other end, followed by his car door shutting.
"I'll be home in thirty minutes, can you stay awake? Sam has gone missing, I'm calling Jack."
"What do you mean Sam has gone missing? Did someone take her? Where was Nico through all this?"
"No, she ran away... I think. I'm not sure. Look, I'll be there soon, and I'll explain everything... Addy, It's really bad, I don't think she's going to be okay this time."
~~~
Jack is the first to arrive, seeming mildly agitated for being summoned out of his bed at this hour. I can only assume Lawrence hasn't told him why he's here. If Sam disappeared, he is the first to become worried. I pour him a drink, knowing that he will need it.
Only a few minutes pass before Lawrence walks in with Nico behind him.
He smells of vomit and avoids eye contact as he takes the glass out of my hand. His fingers are cold and shaking as he silently throws his head back, taking everything in one gulp.
"What is wrong, boy, spit it out," Jack grumbles, his irritation growing more by the second.
"Where is Sam?" I add.
Saying nothing, he walks over to the bar and pours himself another drink with trembling fingers. "Babe, what's wrong?" Even Uncle Jack seems to have softened by the clear distress in my husband's eyes.
"Sam... she... I don't even know where the hunting knife came from. There was blood everywhere."
Briefly, I exchange a look with Uncle Jack. No more of an explanation is needed to know Sam went off the deep end again.
"It's okay, try to breathe." I wrap my arms around him, feeling his entire body shake. At least this explains the smell of vomit, few people can witness that and keep their dinner down.
"I was working on Paolo Capri all day. He resisted broken kneecaps and acid burns without making a squeak. Eventually, we gave up, and I called Sam. I expected her to just order us to dispose of the body, but she decided to give it one last try. She wasn't even in the room for five minutes, and he began talking. He confirmed that they are indeed here on orders of the Salerno family, but then he began talking about Antonia."
Jack shows nothing but horror. We had this conversation months ago, but part of me was hoping he was wrong. I think we both were.
"Paolo Capri was not just a random member of Cacciatrici. He claimed to be the one who killed her, going as far as telling us how long it took for her to begin begging for her life. He taunted Sam, blamed her for everything, and said that they are coming for her to finish the job. We tried stopping her, but it all happened so fast."
Sam can become blinded by rage and almost develops superhuman strength. It's the most horrific thing someone can imagine, the look in her eyes is cold and empty as she hacks people into bits or literally rips them apart with her bare hands. It's not human.
