Zoë
In the last week, Addy has been fighting me at every turn, but I think she is finally coming to terms with her new reality and accepting her bed rest. Having to potentially go through a breeched birth is the only thing that seems to scare her enough to listen to me.
As promised, I have been to Sam's apartment to visit Addy every day this week. She is having much more trouble with her situation than I initially expected, so I do my best to cheer her up whenever she is down.
I swipe the key card at the private elevator for it to open. The first day I dropped by, I was screened, and my medical bag was practically ripped apart. The security wouldn't even let me bring it up until Addy called them off. She then had this specially ordered key card, so I can move in and out without being probed. I know that Sam is considered high-profile in the city, but again, this seems like overkill.
As often as I have been in her apartment, I am still mesmerized by the place every time I walk in. It's modest in size, but I can still see the money that went into decorating it.
With the little I know about Sam, I shouldn't have been surprised that everything is covered in dark colors. The black marble floors, huge metal and glass doors, even her kitchen was made of all black wood. Her apartment is spacious but also cold, having nothing that shows a personal touch.
Part of me had hoped that seeing her place would shed some light on who she is, but it looks like an expensive hotel suite. I don't completely understand how someone can live in a place like this, but from what I've gathered, she is barely home and spends most of her time in her office. I've been here every night, but so far, not seen her once.
The moment I step into the guest room, I am met by the only color in this apartment along with a wave of warmth.
To keep herself comfortable, she turned the heater up in her room to the max, and I find myself quickly in need of stripping out of all my extra layers.
Addy is leaning against the headboard with a smile, watching me struggle to get out of my five extra layers. When I'm left in only my jeans and a shirt, I flop down on the bed with my face buried in the pillow.
"Rough day?"
I grunt my reply into the pillow, to which I hear a giggle. I lost a patient today, and as always, it is affecting me more than I am willing to admit. She doesn't press me to explain.
"How are you feeling?" I ask after I collect myself.
"I'm okay, I've been having a lot of trouble with gas again, but I'm not sure if I should be worried."
"You shouldn't. It's perfectly normal, but if it really is bothering you, I can always prescribe something, but again, it really isn't needed unless it's causing extreme discomfort."
She smiles a bit relieved. I think my daily visits have been helping, but it's not like she needed it. We barely speak about her medical worries. Mostly she is a bit bored and probably also lonely given the fact that Lawrence is out of the country and even if Sam is supposed to be here for her, she's never home.
Ever since Dr. Parks assigned five new doctors to my department, my workload has decreased drastically, and I now have no idea what to do with the extra free time. I figured it's better to spend it here with her than to go home to an empty apartment.
"Maybe I should get a cat." I don't realize I said that out loud until Addy starts to laugh.
"Why would you want a cat, Zo?"
"I don't know, my apartment seems so empty, maybe a cat might fix that."
She shakes her head. "You can't get a cat because you'll have to go home every day and feed it, not to mention clean the litter box and give it attention."
