Zoë

I hover over the sleeping woman on the couch while she clutches the baby monitor as if her life depends on it.

Waking up after my date, I felt all the more confused and planned on going to the hospital and ignoring my thoughts, but before leaving my apartment, I found a message from Tony that Mason was brought in last night with a high fever.

My detour brought me here. Poor Addy probably hasn't slept all night, and she looks it as well.

By the sound of my shifting feet, her eyes flutter open, meeting my gaze. "You never called me last night."

I giggle, she really needs to get her priorities checked. "Mason was in the hospital, shouldn't you have been the one to call me?"

An instant frown appears on her face. "He's fine, just a mild fever, and Dr. Ashley said that there was no need to be so alarmed."

"You should have still called me, you know how much I love Mason, had I known he was sick I would have..."

"That's exactly why I didn't." Even if she tried seeming enthusiastic about my date, we both know what her opinion really is.

When a new cry comes blaring through the monitor, we make our way to the baby's room, where I do a few checkups. "His temperature is going down, so I think he'll be fine in three days."

The woman does not spare a second getting back to her point. "Are we going to talk about last night?"

Usually, she is much more subtle about getting information out of me, but it took her almost an hour to get Mason down again, so her exhaustion really is getting to her. She wants to know everything, but I have no idea what to tell her.

"What time did you get home?"

"Around seven in the morning."

Her eyes seem to almost bulge out of their sockets. She knows I am not the type of person to sleep with someone after one date, even if we have history. "Nothing happened, we just stayed out very late and watched the sunrise before he brought me home."

Rolling her eyes at me, she drops back down on the couch. "You spent an entire night with a man and literally nothing happened? What did you do?"

"We watched a movie and then went to the arcade. And he kissed me when dropping me off. We had a lot of fun, and the entire night reminded me of how great we used to be."

"No, I don't believe it, there is more going on, or you wouldn't be blushing so much. Spill."

I hadn't even realized that was happening, but my tinted cheeks are caused by a different kind of embarrassment. Maybe shame is a better word.

"I don't have to tell you anything I don't want to." My tone is mocking, forcing a challenging glint into her eyes. I don't mind, though, this will keep her busy while I sort things out for myself. There is no way I can tell her that things with Vinny will never work out because I can't ignore my attraction towards a woman who has no interest in me besides meaningless sex.

"Fine, don't tell me, I'll just figure it out on my own. It will be all the more satisfying when I find out. Just know you can always talk to me, and if he really does make you happy, I will support you."

Lying to her makes me feel worse, but what else can I do? Why does Sam have to make everything so much worse? Why can't she just be normal?

Addy

"Mr. Claymore is here to see you." One of our butlers announces while Zoë is packing her medical bag.

As predicted, it's Uncle Jack walking in with a bright grin on his face, his eyes immediately landing on the innocent girl who has no idea what he is up to.
