ZoëMy back lands on the floor, leaving me dizzy and gasping for air. It doesn’t particularly hurt, but I'm definitely disoriented.
Sam hovers over me with a smirk, only adding to my agitation. She said she wouldn’t be going easy on me, but this was more than expected.
A clicking sound pulls both our attention to the door, where Addy is standing with her phone pointed towards me, barely able to contain her laughter. As sweet as she may be, Addy can definitely have a mean streak, and it won’t surprise me if that picture ends up on her wall somwhere.
“Don’t you have work to do?” I quickly get off the ground in hopes of keeping some of my dignity.
“And miss this? Not even if it means my baby begins sleeping for eight hours straight.” Though she tries to hide it, even Sam is smiling at her comment.
“You wouldn’t be so tough if it were you here with me on the mat.” I bite my tongue the moment it slips out. She may be small and gracious, but by now, I know all too well that even Addy could wipe the floor with my ass. Her eyebrow cocks up as she looks me up and down before breaking into a smile.
The door soon opens with Jonas stepping inside and saving me from embarrassing myself even more.
“Sorry to interrupt, Zoë, but if you want to make it to work on time, we need to leave in half an hour.”
Addy insisted we try squeezing in a training session during Sam’s lunch break, and we lost track of time. For some reason, she has been very insistent on continuing these sessions.
With a bit of rushing, I manage to shower and get dressed within fifteen minutes.
I begin brushing my wet hair in the mirror when I feel arms wrap around me from behind and Sam resting her chin on my shoulder. “Will you be coming back here after your shift?”
I meet her reflection with a smile. It took much more time than it would have with anyone else, but finally, she began asking me to stay over instead of demanding or expecting.
Addy is having the time of her life with the mockery and how well I am ‘training’ Sam. “I’ll try to be back before midnight.” I kiss her softly before leaving the bedroom with her right behind me.
Reaching the living room, I am met by Jonas tapping his watch with a smile, “Would you look at that, five minutes to spare.” I roll my eyes at the running joke we have, where I am often late, and he is then forced to rush and get me to my appointments on time.
“Very funny.” I begin reaching for my coat when I remember what day it is. Passing Sam and Addy, I hop over to the fridge and pull out a small cupcake I picked up this morning.
“Happy birthday.”
Though mostly shielded, I can make out the slight blush that appears on his face as I approach him.
“Zoë, you really shouldn’t have.” He wraps his arms around me, crushing me a bit.
“This is just the sweetest thing ever, we should do this for all the staff.” Addy pulls out her phone and begins typing as Sam nonchalantly shrugs and walks into the kitchen.
“Zoë knows Jonas’ birthday, yet I can guarantee that you don’t even know how old Nico is. Why can’t you do nice things like this for people?”
There is a light mocking tone when Addy turns to Sam. “Because I am an arse,” she states blandly before bringing her coffee mug to her face. The others don’t notice it, but I can see the slight twinkle of amusement in Sam’s eyes as she tries hiding her smile. She is an ass, and sometimes a bit too proud of it.
