"Ding!"
The bell of the pet shop rang as Changbin, his boyfriend Felix, and his little brother Jeongin entered the store. Changbin had promised Jeongin a cat to keep him company while he was at work.
(Fun fact: Jeongin and Changbin’s parents passed away six years ago, leaving 17-year-old Changbin to raise 13-year-old Jeongin. Now they all live together in a shared flat, with Felix around to make things a little easier.)
"Welcome to Paw and Claws! How can I help you today?" a cheerful worker greeted them.
"I'm looking for a cat," Changbin replied.
"Right this way, please!"
The worker led them to a section filled with cats of all kinds: fluffy kittens, senior cats, striped tabbies, spotted coats—you name it. Jeongin's face lit up like a child on Christmas morning.
"They’re all so cute! Hyung, I want all of them!" Jeongin exclaimed, practically bouncing on his toes.
Changbin’s eyes widened in horror. He still hadn’t recovered from the trauma Minho’s cats had caused. "Absolutely not. One. Just one, Innie."
"How about two? One for you and one for me!" Jeongin tugged at Changbin’s jacket, practically begging.
Changbin shook his head. "I’m busy, Innie. I’m barely home. Who’s going to take care of it, huh?"
Jeongin pouted, trying to think of a good comeback but failing.
Felix, watching the exchange with amusement, slung an arm around Jeongin’s shoulders. "I’ll take care of it, Binnie. Don’t worry."
Jeongin’s face lit up again, and he joined Felix in giving Changbin their best puppy eyes. "Please, hyung? Pleaaase?"
Changbin sighed, rubbing his temples. He could feel the last shred of his resistance crumbling. "Fine. Two cats."
Jeongin and Felix high-fived each other like they’d just won a championship.
"But!" Changbin interjected sharply, making both boys freeze mid-celebration. "These cats cannot and will not get in the way of your studies. You’ll clean up after them and take proper care of them. Got it?"
"Got it, hyung!" Jeongin chirped, already scanning the cats eagerly.
Felix leaned in to peck Changbin on the cheek. "Thanks, Binnie." Then he darted off to help Jeongin.
"What kind of cat do you want, Innie?" Felix asked.
Jeongin pointed to a playful orange tabby. "I like this one, Lix! What about you?"
Felix glanced around indecisively. "Hmm, I don’t know. Why don’t you pick one for me?"
Jeongin nodded eagerly. "Okay, Lixie! Let’s find you the perfect cat!"
After much deliberation, they finally settled on a second cat and returned to Changbin, who was waiting near the counter.
"All set?" Changbin asked.
"Yup!" Jeongin said, smiling wide enough to show his braces.
Changbin informed the worker, "We’ll take both of them."
The worker beamed. "Excellent choice! Follow me to the counter, please."
Felix turned to Jeongin. "Stay here, don’t wander off, and definitely don’t talk to strangers, okay?"
Jeongin nodded obediently but wandered off anyway, lost in thought about what to name his new cat. Passing the dog section, he admired the barking and wagging tails until he noticed an empty cage.
