Fluff, highschool au
Jeongin stood on the school rooftop, the crisp wind nipping at his cheeks. His fingers trembled as they clutched the small charm bracelet he'd brought with him. The silver links gleamed softly in the golden light of the setting sun, but his racing heart barely let him focus on it. ‘Just say it,’ he told himself, though his chest felt tight with fear (and nervousness)
The creak of the rooftop door made him spin around, his breath catching in his throat. Hyunjin stepped out, his slightly long black hair catching the sunlight in a way that made him look almost unreal. He leaned approached Jeongin, skipping lightly, his lips quirking into a soft smile.
Hyunjin’s presence always made Jeongin comfortable, along with an unexplainable familiarity that he himself can't understand why the older made him feel this way.
"You wanted to talk?" Hyunjin asked, his tone light but curious, his head tilting slightly as he took in Jeongin’s nervous posture.
Jeongin swallowed hard, he tried to make his voice stable yet it still came out shaky. "Yeah, I... I do."
Hyunjin stepped closer, his gaze gentle but questioning. "What’s going on? You’re fidgeting like crazy."
Hyunjin put his hands on Jeongin's shoulders in an attempt to calm him down. “Stop it,” he chuckled gently, “you're gonna be fine.”
Jeongin let out a nervous laugh, gripping the bracelet tighter in his hands. "I’m just… nervous," he admitted, his cheeks flushing as he avoided Hyunjin’s eyes. But he knew he had to say it, no matter how scared he was. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to meet Hyunjin’s gaze.
“It's ok, you can tell me, I won't judge.” Hyunjin encouraged as he patted Jeongin's shoulders playfully.
‘Here goes nothing’ Jeongin took a deep breath.
"Hyunjin, I… I like you," Jeongin said, cursing internally at how his voice was trembling. "I’ve liked you for a long time. I know you might not feel the same, and that’s okay, but I… I needed to tell you."
The words spilled out before he could stop them, and for a moment, Hyunjin just stared at him, his eyes wide with surprise.
There was silence between them, and Jeongin’s heart sank as he saw the hesitation in Hyunjin’s expression.
"Jeongin…" Hyunjin said softly, his voice carrying a note of regret. He looked down, his fingers playing with the hem of his uniform jacket. "That’s… really sweet of you. And I’m flattered, I really am, but…" He trailed off, meeting Jeongin’s eyes again, and this time, there was something sad in his gaze. "I can’t accept your feelings."
Jeongin felt like the world had crumbled beneath his feet. His grip on the charm bracelet faltered, his knuckles going white as he fought to keep his composure. "Why not?" he asked quietly, his words slipping from his mouth before he could even stop it.
Hyunjin hesitated, looking away as if searching for the right words. Finally, he sighed, his shoulders slumping. "Because… I’m still in love with someone."
Jeongin bit his lip harshly to refrain his tears from spilling, looking down on his feet as his fingers never loosened the grip from his bracelet.
“It’s alright, I kinda expected this,” Jeongin said with a forced laugh. He swears this is the most embarrassing and heartbreaking moment of his life.
Jeongin figures it was either because Jeongin looked pretty pathetic holding his tears like that, or Hyunjin is a kind and nice person (one of the many, many reasons why Jeongin likes him), or maybe a bit of both that Hyunjin sighed softly and wrapped Jeongin in a somewhat awkward hug.
