College au, fluff, angst

It was just another Friday night for Jeongin.

Opened books were scattered all around the room, colorful pens lay forgotten in every corner of the desk, a tangled pair of earphones rested in a mess, and his laptop glowed brightly amidst the disarray. Yet, Jeongin sat there, unfazed, his focus entirely on his homework.

Yep. Another boring Friday.

Jeongin groaned as his stretched, his back cracking in the process. Jeongin sighed through his nose, staring blankly at the chaos in front of him.

It had been three long hours since he'd started, yet his progress was disappointing. Half of the work remained untouched, and the fatigue was catching up to him.

Rubbing his tired eyes, Jeongin yawned. Blinking a few times to shake off the drowsiness, he grabbed his energy drink and chugged the rest in two quick gulps, hoping for a miracle surge of motivation.

After stretching again, he wandered around the room, cracking his neck and knuckles as he paced. The short break helped clear his head, and he finally felt ready to tackle the workload again when—

Ring ring

Jeongin froze. His phone was ringing.

For a split second, he was annoyed, but then a wave of relief washed over him. An excuse to stop? Yes, please.

'It better not be a spam call or else I'm gonna yell at them.'

Finally, after some digging, he unearthed it from beneath his chemistry book. His irritation faded, replaced by a small, involuntary smile. "Jinnie Hyung."

Jeongin’s heart skipped a beat.

Okay, maybe—just maybe—Jeongin had the biggest crush on Hwang Hyunjin. But honestly, who wouldn’t? Good looks, an infectious personality, and a laugh that could brighten anyone’s day—Hyunjin was basically perfect.

Not wanting the elder to wait too long (because Jeongin already spent 15 seconds on trying to find his phone), Jeongin picked up the phone.

"Hell-"

"JEONGIN-AH!!"

Jeongin flinched, yanking the phone away from his ear as Hyunjin’s voice blasted through.

'Why is he shouting?' Jeongin thought as he rubbed his poor ears.

“Hyung?” he called out hesitantly.

There was a shuffle on the other end, followed by Hyunjin’s unmistakable giggle.

“JEONGINNIE HELLOWW~!”

Jeongin frowned at the odd greeting and switched the phone to speaker mode. “Yah! Why are you yelling? My ears hurt, you know!”

Another laugh—loud and carefree—rang out, and Jeongin felt his heart flutter despite himself.

“Look! There’s a ducky… Say hi to the ducky… Hellow, Mr. Duck!” Hyunjin slurred, his words dragging into an almost childlike sing-song.

Jeongin stared at the phone in bewilderment. ‘What is he even talking about?’ he wondered before a troubling thought crossed his mind. ‘Is he drunk?’

“Hyung? Are you okay?” Concern seeped into his tone.

“Mhm…”

Before Jeongin could press further, his phone displayed a request to switch to a video call. Without hesitation, he accepted, his worry outweighing his embarrassment at how fast he’d clicked.
