Sacrificial love

Jeongin is a college student here (23) while Hyunjin is already working (26)

Jeongin happily skipped towards the park, a giddy smile on his face, a paper bag filled with treats in his hand. His boyfriend had asked him to meet him at the park where Hyunjin first asked him to be officially boyfriends. He couldn’t shake the feeling of excitement as he approached a tall figure by the seesaw.

It was night time, around 8 o’clock, and the park was dark except for a few street lights lighting up the place.

“Jinnie!” Jeongin chirped excitedly, running towards Hyunjin and giving the elder a warm hug.

Hearing no response, Jeongin broke the hug and looked at Hyunjin confusedly. Hyunjin's eyes were shifting every now and then, looking everywhere but Jeongin. Jeongin also noticed Hyunjin’s expression was cold and expressionless, so different from the fond and loving expression he used to give Jeongin.

“Jeongin.”

Hyunjin’s voice broke the eerie silence, making Jeongin worried.

“Are you okay, love? You know you can always tell me about your problems.” Jeongin assured with a smile, one that was not returned by the elder.

“Look, I want to make this simple and quick, so please don’t interrupt me.” Hyunjin blurted, his cold eyes finally meeting Jeongin’s confused ones.

“I don’t think… this is working out.”

Jeongin swore his heart stopped for a moment. ‘No no no, please don’t tell me he’s gonna say-’

“I’m breaking up with you.”

Jeongin took a sharp intake of air, dropping the paper bag he was previously holding. His heart pounded, but not in the butterfly-inducing way he was used to, this time it was an anxious and worried heart pounding, and Jeongin didn't like it one bit.

“What?! Why? Jinnie, please tell me this is a joke.” Tears welled up in Jeongin’s eyes as he held Hyunjin’s arm, only for it to be harshly swatted away.

“You’re not good enough for me.” As words tumbled out of Hyunjin’s mouth, Jeongin could no longer see as clearly because his eyes were blurred due to his tears, threatening to fall.

“I’ll try to be better! Please, just don’t do this.” Jeongin cried, his lips trembling slightly.

Hyunjin started backing away. “I’m sorry.”

Jeongin shook his head vigorously, not accepting to be left without an explanation.

“But… But you told me you loved me last week.” Jeongin protested. “You said you’d never leave me.”

“Things change, Jeongin.” Hyunjin answered, walking away from Jeongin.

Jeongin still didn’t give up, chasing the elder and holding back his arm. “Please… just please tell me why you're breaking up with me.” Jeongin whimpered sadly.

Hyunjin sighed and slowly took off Jeongin’s hand that was holding his wrist.

“I just… I just don’t see a future with you.”

“Did those 3 years mean NOTHING to you?!” Jeongin could no longer hold the tears from overflowing, he shook his head once more as his tears flowed on his cheeks. Hyunjin stopped walking and fell silent. Taking the chance, Jeongin decided to ask a question.

“Did you even love me?” he whispered, voice trembling.

“Let me go, Jeongin.” Hyunjin demanded, avoiding the question.
