Winston Arnett closed his office door and dialed a number on his cell phone. His handsome tanned face was pensive. He was a good lawyer. A damn fine lawyer. But he was a human being first. He fully believed that Rebecca was his and Sarah's daughter. After all he had been with Sarah way more than Richard Norland during their joke of a marriage. That was what Sarah had told him after all. But on the off chance that he wasn't..... He had an ace in the hole. He was not taking any chances. There was no way that Sarah's daughter would be raised in an unnatural home by two perverts like Richard Norland and his so called husband. Sarah would be horrified if that ever happened.
" The test is done," a crisp voice answered his call.
Winston swallowed hard and said," And ? "
" Richard Norland is the father. "
Winston wanted to curse. " But you changed it ? "
" I didn't get my payment. Yet. "
Winston's nostrils flared with suppressed anger as he repeated," But you changed it? "
The voice sighed. " Of course I did. Per our arrangement. You are now the proud daddy of a bouncing baby girl named Rebecca Norland. When do I get my money? If you don't pay I'll tell Richard Norland the truth. And the Bar Association. And the State Attorney. "
Winston snapped tersely," You'll get your money. And a little extra to keep your mouth shut. My father taught me never to pay until the job is done. "
Then the assistant state's attorney hung up the phone. He sighed and said," The things I do for the love of a woman. "
He looked upward. " It's ok , Sarah. He'll never corrupt your daughter. Never. "
