Nigel was the only one awake that Saturday morning. He was usually an early riser and so was Richard but that day his husband chose to sleep in and he was happy to let him. After all yesterday had been an eventful nightmare from hades. And, he sighed as he sat at the dining room table googling decorating firms for the restaurant, nothing had been done about the DNA situation. He was still positive that the test was wrong and was going to talk to Richard later about a second test. Of course he was happy that Richard was going to court seeking custody. In fact on the table he already had a notepad which had a list of names of people willing and able to testify in court for them.

Andrew and Glory.

Spencer and DuBuis.

Faith Lane.

His old roommate Marco with his White House politics connection.

Richard's two fellow senior partners.

Nigel leaned back in his chair and sighed. He knew their chances of winning were good but what if they lost ? What if the original test was right? Would a judge side with them ? An openly gay couple? And would his own background count against them?

Suddenly his chest hurt and his throat was feeling like it wanted to tighten up. He took a couple of quick deep breaths. Finally it cleared up. It had been years since he had had an asthma attack but stress did occasionally bring it on and God knew that there had been a lot of stress in their lives lately. He shook his head. He could not afford to have an attack. Not now. He had never seen Richard like this. The prospect of losing his daughter was throwing him completely off balance.

It was throwing them both off balance, he realized. He never had figured himself for the father type but that little girl was winning over his heart so fast. He was quite enjoying being a stepfather even though yesterday he had been scared to death that he would not be able to protect her. He had never run so fast with her in his arms. Frankly it had been even more terrifying than being kidnapped by Lonnie.  Which was saying something. And then watching Spencer actually approaching a madman with a gun.......

He stood up from the table. It was probably a good time to start breakfast and rouse his husband and their daughter from bed. Suddenly he felt a bit of dizziness overcome him. It was so bad he had to grab hold of the table to steady himself.

Wow. Yes. It was definitely time to make food , he decided. Obviously his blood sugar was running low. He took a slower than normal careful step forward as he moved to the kitchen, his mind running through meal ideas. After yesterday he wanted to cook something special for his family.
