chapter zero, backstory.
IN 18TH CENTURY FRANCE, a family with the surname Heart was at the top of the food chain. The family consisted of Viscount Anthony Heart and Viscountess Loring Heart, the parents of the family. In total, the two had five children: Maxwell, Lissette, Amouri, Soriettea, and Francesca.
In the family, Francesca was the only one not courting someone. That is what made her the most hated Heart in her family, with the exception of two of her siblings who actually liked her.
Maxwell is the eldest and is married to Melissa, and is completely and utterly in love with her. It wasn't hard to fall in love with the perfection that was Melissa, and even though it was a courting out of conventionality, their relationships was full of love and happiness. Maxwell was extremely protective of his sisters, especially Francesca; Francesca was the only one in her family who was still pure and innocent. Truth be told, Francesca had always been his favorite sister, and he rather supported her views--although not completely--and was humored by her attitude.
Lissette is the second eldest Heart sibling, she is married to a certain Lord Garrett Watson, whom she didn't love. Being with Garrett was insufferable, but she did it for her mother. Garrett was controlling and had hatred that filled his heart, not only did he direct his hate to Lissette but he also tried to control Francesca on multiple occasions. Lissette is the type of girl any man would want: proper, ladylike and keeps her mouth shut when not talked to. Everything Lissette Watson did was perfect, and if it wasn't perfect it wasn't Lissette's doing. Although Lissette wanted nothing more than to please her mother, she absolutely hated the women. No one knew why.
Amouri is the middle child of the Heart family, along with her siblings she is also married. Her husband's name is Jean Vexin, otherwise known as the Duke of Yorkshire. Because of that, Amouri has been deemed their mothers 'most prized possession,' and her most successful daughter. Because of that, the rest of the siblings, aside from Francesca, hated Amouri for it. The poor girl felt so bad, she couldn't control who she was married too and how successful she was. Amouri was a bit more like Francesca than she was to Lissette, she was more flexible on life and more adventurous, and she was unlike her siblings in another way; Amouri supported Francesca wholeheartedly.
Sorietta Heart wasn't married, no, the fourth child hasn't gotten to that point yet. She was currently engaged to Count Elijah Dence, although her mother wasn't too proud of it; Elijah was the highest offer Soriettea got. Elijah was protective and needy, unlike any of the Heart siblings had seen, but Soriettea had shown no signs of not loving it. Soriettea and Elijah were in love, thankfully. So far, Sorietta was described as the 'prettiest' of the Heart siblings. Sorietta didn't care for Francesca. She neither liked nor disliked the girl, she had no opinions. She has never gotten to know her little sister, nor did she care to.
Now, our story falls onto the youngest Heart sibling, Francesca Heart. She wasn't interested in marriage, kids or success at all. She just wanted to live. If she were to ever marry or have any of that, she would do it for love and interest. She was improper, not only because she hated being proper but because she hated the norms that was set by the men of France. She was one of the first feminists in her area, and she took pride in that.
Along with Francesca, a certain Prince Aaron Tveit is crucial to the story. The Prince, and his mother, Queen Victoria, were known for being cold. They never really showed interest in people outside of their family and friends. Now, Aaron was going to be throned King soon, and to do that he needed a Queen. One that would be there to provide him at least one heir, and one that he could stand enough to speak to. He needed a friend, more than a wife.
