Previously on The Papers:
"I quite like the sound of Richard Wilson, don't you?" Slade's steel blue eye sparkled in victory.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Richard felt the dread drop in his stomach.
The hopelessness of this situation hit him full force.
He's not going to be able to see or live with Bruce and Alfred again.
Would he not be able to go out and be Robin anymore?
But the Teen Titans needed him!
He helped set up Young Justice and even parts of the Justice League!
Surely they'd find a way out of this for him.
'But what if they don't?' The worried, inner voice betrayed his trust.
Then he was stuck with Slade.
Slade.
Wilson.
Just who was Slade Wilson?
Dick smirked as he realized he got another piece of vital information.
Wilson. A name to go off of.
This is a double-sided sword.
Well, after all they say to make the most of your situations.
And Robin was going to make this a hell of a situation.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Slade walked Robin down the hall to a room.
It was bare but had the necessities; a bed, a dresser, and an attached bathroom.
"This is where you'll be sleeping." Slade guided him in.
"Okay... Slade Wilson." Robin looked defiantly at him.
"Yes, Dick Grayson-Wilson?" Slade smirked, just as headstrong.
"Was that a calculated risk?" Robin asked.
"To let you know my name? Yes. You'd find it eventually. However you won't find anything on me. Except maybe in the Justice League database. As far as any one else is concerned, I'm a free man." Slade said.
"And before you get any smart ideas, this compound has a signal dampener. You won't get any internet unless I allow it." Slade smirked. "And no signal to your friends... or anyone else."
"You know Bruce will fight this until it's made right again." Robin said.
"I think he's a little preoccupied with trying to not be tried to child abuse. Either way though, he has no claim on you. You were never adopted officially by him. Therefore, anyone can adopt you until you're of legal adult status. I know this stings right now. But you'll learn to like me. Maybe I will be an actual father to you." Slade said before slipping out.
Damn, he was right. This did sting.
And there was nothing he or the Teen Titans could do.
But the Justice League might be able to?
Dick could only wish.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning, Dick quickly changed into the only clothes in the dresser- civilian clothing.
Black skinny jeans, a black shirt, a green hoodie, and a pair of converse.
No sunglasses or any covering for his face.
Robin kept his mask on.
He jumped slightly as the door hissed open, unlocking.
Richard pulled the door open and looked around.
Then he proceeded to try to open every door in the hallway.
Only one opened, sadly.
It lead to a kitchen with a small table on one side.
And a man sitting at it.
Robin was in shock for a minute, but he could recognize the one steely blue eye in an instant.
Slade was old?!
Long white hair was pulled into a tight ponytail, a white goatee was neatly trimmed, and an eye patch sat on one side of his face.
"Richard, good morning." Slade smirked as he looked up from a newspaper and took a sip of coffee.
"Come now. Breakfast is ready and afterwards we're going to get your official I.D. You're going to have to leave the mask." Slade said, glee seeping through his words.
"No! You're my enemy. I'm not unmasking in front of you!" Dick growled.
"Did you forget I already know who you are? I've seen plenty of pictures. Plus, your mask would just draw more attention. It has to go." Slade said calmly.
Dick hesitated.
But Slade was right. A mask in civies don't mix.
Richard slowly peeled it off, looking at Slade.
He felt so naked and vulnerable.
"Good. Eat your breakfast and we'll go." Slade smirked, eyes meeting his.
Well, his one eye meeting Richard's two.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"This is Vickie Vale with the Gotham Gazette, reporting on the biggest scandal of the century. Bruce Wayne has been charged with child neglect, abuse, and endangerment of his ward, Richard Grayson. Meanwhile in this case, Richard Grayson has been officially adopted in a closed adoption for his own safety from Bruce Wayne. We will now show pictures. Viewer discretion is advised as these are quite gruesome." Vickie Vale's voice came through the radio which was replaying the TV version of the day's news.
"The trial of Bruce Wayne will be on..." Richard tuned the radio station out as he looked out the car window.
"It will die down after he's be tried." Slade said.
"Is that supposed to comfort me?" Richard growled, eyes flashing in rage.
"No. I'm merely stating a fact. Most things will die down a month or so after the person is tried." Slade said.
Dick huffed and continued to look out the window.
They arrived shortly after to their destination.
Slade kept Richard close as they took the back entrance to the BMV.
A man greeted them and immediately took them into an office.
"Mr. Wilson, good to see you. And your new son." The man smiled kindly at Richard.
"It's nice to see you too, Mr. Anderson." Slade nodded.
"As this is a sensitive... case, I'll go ahead with the process." Anderson nodded and started typing at his computer.
They were there to get an official government I.D. of Richard's new name.
It was a relatively quick process.
Slade pulled out a black card as he paid for the fees and a little extra for the discretion.
He also flashed the I.D. at Richard so he could see.
'Richard Wilson'
He pocketed both his card and Richard's new I.D.
It still didn't feel real.
This had to be some horrible nightmare.
Right?
