23rd JUNE 2013

"You were right," Cami's voice was panting, "This town's cursed."

Only moments earlier, The Mikaelson Compound had been a competition of sound; Klaus had locked himself in his art room, trying to ignore the full moon, Hope with Hayley, while Kol did everything in his power to be a nuisance, trying not to think about the wedding.

One had blasted music from a gramophone, the other yelling for him to shut it up.

Or at least pick a better album.

And to stop slamming doors.

Leading to a retort about how if Klaus didn't pick up his phone, Kol would, and then tell whoever kept ringing him to –

"I need you, but you – you need to be calm," Cami cut herself off with a choke as Klaus looked up from the courtyard, "There are enough bodies already..."

His phone had been left there, Kol standing at the top of the stairs, their eyes locked.

"I'm with her, and I don't know what to do, and she has vampire blood in her system but apparently siphoners keep their magic? And the Prison World psychopath is somewhere, and I think I might be about to die, and Tyler just re-triggered his curse, and – "

A louder sob.

"And – "

Everyone else in Mystic Falls was on fire, Camille, a stranger, watching their chaos. Sat on the hood of a car. Desperate for someone who might actually be able to do anything, while Mira Jung Floare-Ruiz lay dead beside her.

"Alaric – "

Kol took a single step down the stairs.

"I – he – "

Klaus felt his arms drop, the words hitting him like bricks.

"He's killed everyone."

"Kol – "

"Most of the wedding guests, and the bride, and – and – "

"Don't."

As Kol moved, Klaus got there faster, grabbing him before he could make it out the door, chucking him back into the room. The phone dropped to the floor with a cracking sound, only for Kol to punch back harder, knocking his elder brother through the space and trying to bolt, shoulders caught, and forced to the floor.

Kol flipped Klaus, a second punch whacking his jaw, forcing his older brother to grab his throat and push –

"Think."

"Think!" His hand on Klaus's wrist, slowly crushing it, "She – "

Klaus shoved him to the side, "Has vampire blood in her system!"

Kol's entire posture changed, entirely rigid, on the floor of The Compound, Klaus terrified his brother might accidentally 'shoot' the messenger if he raced off alone.

"Listen to what Camille's saying."

She'd asked Klaus to be calm.

She'd phoned him.

Everything was falling to pieces and they needed him to help.

Kol slowly sat up as Klaus pushed to his feet and offered a hand. The elder was trying not to fall right back into that room, only a summer earlier, having to listen as Caroline and Tyler broke the news the first time.
