MARCH 2014

Nadia Petrova shoved up in her bed as the coughing became too loud to ignore. Blood was splattered across the floor of a neighbouring room; Katherine Pierce, hunched over the kitchen sink, elbows shaking, the rising sun just behind the closed curtains. The pair were thousands of miles away from whatever was causing her body to shut down, clenching in her heart, then splitting through her lungs, cracking like each bone was a twig, desperate to snap.

"Maminka," Her voice was weak as she watched flesh turn frail, "Katerina."

"Leave."

"I – "

"LEAVE," She screeched as she sunk to the floor, unable to stop her head from rocking back, "I – We – "

The deep crimson of her tank top only made her skin look paler, lips stained with blood for the first time in what felt like forever, dripping onto the cream tiled floor. The apartment was decently sized, made for temporary occupation, the pair on a tour of places they'd both once lived. Seeing what it was like to live without the fear of the hunt.

"This happened the last time!" Nadia appeared by her side, "You woke up."

The phrase was spoken like a prayer to the universe.

"The magic calmed, and you woke."

Each second let another spill of blood paint the floor, the tap overhead twisted, spraying, creating a tiny tornado behind them. Water – turning, and turning – and –

"Phone her," Katherine choked, "Phone him."

"But – "

"Now."

Nadia could barely move, her night shirt slowly soaked as she desperately tried to hold her mother. As she tried to ease the shivers, and the pulsing muscles, body unable to do anything but bleed.

"We – we – "

She shoved out of Nadia's hold, elbows pressed into the freezing floor as sweat covered her forehead, something pouring fire across her skin –

"Mira," Katherine knew it had to be about her, "MJ – what have you – "

Something stabbed into her forehead, like it was carving a shape, her scream about to wake any neighbour still residing around them, flashes of white, and yellow, and blue –

Power.

The world in front of Katherine splintered, leaving Nadia's face in one sector, a casing of blue over the door to their living room, and a blasting of white, absorbing into a brown iris, suddenly blue, then white again, and screaming, and red

"Please," Katherine didn't beg often.

Her scream only grew, back ripping up, like whatever jewel had hit her face was now being scraped down her spin, the images replaced. A woman was drowning – a baby was drowning – Klaus was holding up the head of a child – but then that child was a different one – her body cut in four –

"PLEASE."

"Mother," Nadia grabbed her back, "Let me help."

Every nerve was burning, body falling entirely forward, just caught from slamming face first into tiles by Nadia's arms.
